Regarding Rolex watches
All 'Gentlemen's' Rolex watches are either 'automatic' or manual winding. If you see a Gentlemen's Rolex that requires a battery; it's a fake. The only battery powered (Quartz) Rolex is a Ladies Cellini Edition.
This is a photo of a Rolex movement. That is the rotor on top that appears to be a cut out disk. That 'rotor' rotates with a person's arm movement; in turn, winding the watch. Most 'automatic' watches have a power reserve of 36-50 hours, depending on the brand. This means; that if you remove the watch; it will continue to run on reserve power, for a certain period of time. These 'automatic' watches use 'no battery'.
A Rolex Submariner (around $3,000.00)...
The 'Daytona' (stainless steel) ($10,000.00)
This particular Ladie's Rolex is a quartz (battery powered) watch ($8,500.00)...
The finest watches in the World are either automatic or manual wind. The 'purist' collector collects these types of watches. Not ones with quartz movements. Although; he may have a few in his collection, it's a sure bet; his true passion are the watches with the mechanical (automatic or manual wind) movements.
Are Rolex the best watches in the world? No. While certainly considered among the best, there are watchmakers that offer finer movements. Rolex, indeed, offers a rugged watch in the Submariner, Daytona, etc.... There are other watchmakers, that offer timepieces as good or oftentimes considered better. It's all in what you're looking for.
Many consider 'Patek Philippe' watches to be the finest in the world. They are hand made (some other brands are too). This model retails for $22,000.
This Patek Philippe Grand Compliction retails for $87,900 (handmade)
