Rishie's FITMENT RECIPE

Lot's of good info in here...

...but I still have a question.

I just bought a set of 17x7 +48 wheels with 215/50/17 tires. I lowered the car on Progress springs (bitchin!) but I got rub on the front fenders (at the top of the lip) and rub on the rear struts (underside of the spring perch) and at the rear of the fenders near the skirts.

I like the wheels, but I need to ditch the tires.

My question is this, can I run 215/45/17 tires and eliminate the rubbing? The car will be driven aggressively from time to time with auto-xing and some track duty. I don't want rub! Nada. Zip.

I like a little beefier and thicker sidewall, hence why I want the 45's over the 40's. If I have to, I'll run the 40's, but I'd rather not.

Mucho thanks in advance.

I would think a 215/45 would work better but I'd probably go with the 215/40 instead. This is just based on experience with my car. I have Enkeis with +42, lowered on Progressives. Originally I had 205/45s and had major rubbing at the rear fenders. Since then I got 205/40s, rolled my fenders and it seems to be fine. I only get the slightest of rubs if I'm in a turn and there is a bump. But it's rubbed enough that it now clears okay. Your wheels should fit better in the wheelwell than mine but that might explain the rubbing on the perch. I would think a 215/45 may work but it would depend on the shape of the tire as well. Some are squarer than others. I would even think of going to a 205/45 or 205/40. I think you'd be safe with the 40 but may have to go through it all over again with a 45 whether it's a 215 or 205.

Thanks for the input.

I've looked at tire measurements online (total diameter, etc) and I might go with the 45's, because they are nearly 1 inch shorter, and I wasn't rubbing by much.

I've got the car going in for an alignment Thursday at a good tire shop. I'll get their opinion as well and let you guys know what happens!

your crazy -- (cheers)

well I test fitted the 17x7.5" +48 with the 225/45's today and simulated the bump levels the car will see on track(if I can stay on it) and it looks like the tires are going to clear, BARELY!

I need to machine the hub bore a little deeper for a good fit on the rear hub, align the car and recheck clearance before I get too excited... but I'm pretty sure the meats are gonna work out a-ok. btw, i can only fit a finger between the tire and fender at ride height (thumb)

i figured it'd be reallllly close -- But i was just saying what you asked --someone tell me i'm crazy!! hehehe

Just an update for those with Pro5's...

With Progress springs and 17x7 +48 wheels 215/50 and 215/45 tires will not fit. There's rubbing on the front fender lip and the rear spring perches along with the plastic part of the rear fender, near the skirt.

I placed an order for 205/40/17 (this seems to be the default tire size for lowered Pro5's) Kumho MX's.
:)

I'm lookin at a set of Rota Sub-Zeros 18x7.5 +48 offset for my ES. I plan on putting the Racing Beat springs on as well. Should I be good, or should I stick to 17s to play it safe. Keep in mind I live in MI, roads are not the greatest in the world.

You will be okay if you go with a 215/35/18 tire. anything bigger and you are risking a rub. Also a with those wheels and 215/35/18 tires you can slam it and it wont rub! But be weary that with that tire any large pothole will leave you with a bent wheel.

Good to know. Yeah I was planning on some 215/35/18s for the rubber. Thanks for the response.

How much you clearing the struts by? Are you a sedan or wagon?

I'm debating on 225's on my Rota Tarmacs (+48)... I can only go about -1.5 degrees in back before I start getting contact with my JIC's with the current bridgestone REO40's which have the damn curb protector lip on them... so I"m thinking a non-curb protecting tire and 225 and I should be okay... thoughts??? Just trying to find traction for this beast...

I have no idea on strut clearance. I still need to finish boring the wheels for proper fitment. I'm only getting -1* rear camber. The fit is soo tight I won't be able to drive on the street with them. This weekend I plan to finish fitting them and I'll post up the results.

With the 215 street tires on +48 offset 7.5" rims with the JIC's I was able to get 2.0 degrees negative in the rear, and I stopped at 3 degrees negative camber up front (could have gone for more without issue). Plenty of clearance on the outside. When I put on 205/50/15 race slicks with a +22 offset rim I have all sorts of clearance in all directions.

alright I need a little help because i am rim/wheel/tire retarted... the wheels that I want are 17x7.5 5x114.3 and come in +45 and I have a stock suspension MSP what size tires would I need in order to fit these wheels The rims also come in 17x8 +48mm i don't know if those would work.

Like I said i don't know much about rims/tires so any help you guys could give me would be awesome

Thanks so much in advance

Well I ended up and went down to Houston for Memorial day to visit some buddies in town from the Marines, so hopefully I'll have the time to finish fitting the wheels this week. Found I need to take off .1" the face of the bore. If I hadn't mounted tires to them already I would just mill them... the airtools will do though.

vcinsanity- a +45 is going to be very close, but with stock suspension I doubt you'll rub unless fully loaded. A 205/40/17 would be the safest tire, but you can probably still get away with a 215/45/17. If you rub at all the sidewall is going to get cut up though. Happens to me with +48 215/40/17s but I'm dropped 1-1.5"...

If you do the 7.5's with 215 tires you should be fine. It's what I run on the same offset.

thank you guys so much for the help i really appreciate it

I run a lot of negative camber though which helps pull the top of the rim away from the fender... so dunno if you are there or not... that may be one reason it works great for me.

hmmm so 205/40/17 would be the safest bet?

I don't know of anyone that has had actual problems with 215's though... all my buddies that have protege's have run them, my brother runs them etc. The difference is obviously rims. I guess what it comes down to is you can run 215's and if they rub for some reason, just get a set of camber bolts from flyin miata and have the rears cambered negative (good for handling) some and you'll be just fine.
