ridiculous (and awesome) gas mileage?

wow!! you guys make me so freaking jealous!! i'm constantly getting 23-24 pure city, the only thing that i have changed about the car is 18" rims. everything else is stock. WTF!!! what am i doing wrong here. i'm using 89oct

Do you have an intake or anything?? I heard that helps a little with gas mileage, it helps your car breathe much better so its not sitting gasping for air. Its just being fed to it if that makes sense

That is correct. It's just a slow release. Breathing makes total sense.

NO! Bad potato. You guys need to be careful about just slapping any stupid item on your car. Do some research and you will find that the placement for the filter on most SRI is terrible. The stock intake receives somewhat pressurized air as you drive down the road. A SRI is usually located in the engine bay behind the radiator fans. Now not only are you loosing your nice charging effect, you're also heating the air that the engine is pulling in. Higher air temp=less density (less oxygen to burn). It's all about filter placement. It's best to keep that charging effect at high speeds but also to remove as much piping and bends(restrictions) as possible.

But if you do even more research, you'll find out that torque is lost down low with an aftermarket intake. Don't bother with an intake, it's a waste of your energy, and will do nothing to bump up your mileage.

I mostly drive around town, rarely over 40, and mostly tiny 2-3 mile commutes so the car is cold for many of its miles. Just so much more remarkable that I get 30 mpg! Anyway, it was installed when I bought the car.

All I'm saying is do research before going out and buying something. You're right, most SRI are located in the same spot in the engine bay, however, that doesn't mean it's a good location. Our stock intake is not bad, it was designed by mazda to have adequate capacity for normal demands on the engine. I have a custom routed intake to improve air flow because my car is not always driven under normal circumstances. When the intakes are tested on a dyno, the hood is open and there is a fan blowing on the engine to keep things cool. That is not how a car is driven down the road, so you're getting inaccurate numbers from a company trying to make money. They may not be lying about the HP gains, but the numbers don't come from real world driving.

I think it's great that you get 30mpg, but I doubt you'd notice a difference without the SRI. Aftermarket intakes do sound cool too.

Well im around 30-34 and its ******* great 25 bucks fills it up and it lasts about a week and half

you'd probably get better mileage with 87 considering you have a car that doesn't require anything higher. In fact your car was tuned from the factory to run at 87...
