2002 Mazda P5
Hi. I am a noobie. Just purchased a 2002 Vivid Yellow P5 a week ago. It has just under 45K and I want to replace the tires. (The tread is uneven, probably due to being driven out of allignment).

Since 195 50 16 is a strange tire size, there are not may options out there. Who has replaced their tires on the stock wheels (or stock size)?

I am considering the Kuhmo 712s and the Toyo Proxes 4 right now. (These will be only for the warmer months, not in the snow or colder months). I have read many impressions of the Kuhmos, but not the Toyo Proxes 4. Has anyone run these tires? What do you think?

Thanks for your feedback! (hear ya)

I would go to a 205/45/16- a much easier size to find that opens up options- I haven't run the proxes on a protege yet, but past experience was pretty good- notice I went with the kumho's myself though good luck and welcome aboard

Welcome to the site. :D

I just ordered a set of the Toyo Proxes 4. Everything I've read about them says that they are a great tire; MUCH better than stock.

There are a couple threads about this. Do a search and enjoy all the info this site has to offer. (eekdance)

Thanks! I found the wheel and tire forum after I posted. (doh)

I am also thinking about a few other upgrades: SSK, airhorn and brakes.

Looks like a good board here. (hi)

I have the tires. They are way cool!! You'll like them....awesome in the rain and good in the snow.

Just put a set of Proxes 4 on my girlfriend's P5. (She still has the stock rims on.) And they're a great all around tire. Good wet weather performance, and low road noise.

I have the Proxes 4's but I run pressures of 40 front and 37 rear (the sidewall max is 50) for daily driving, otherwise the sidewalls are too soft. Although at 32/32 the ride is comfy. You'll probably need to experiment to find what's right for you.

I autox'ed yesterday and ran 48.5/46.5 and they still rolled under a bit and made me nervous, but they sure stuck better than the stock RE92's. The fronts got a little melted and some torn edges because I didn't spray them with water between runs. They should recover in a couple days of driving. Temp was about 76 degrees, partly sunny on asphault with a wide, fast course. Perhaps if it was a slower tighter course they would have been fine.

BF Goodridge Traction T/A's ?????????????

Anyone try these sneakers on a P5? 205/50/16...
Either the BF Goodridge Traction T/A, Proxes 4's or the P-Zero's.
Or even the Falken ZE-512's......
Looking for a great all season performer that wont leave me slippin & a slidin the water and snow,, (gun) (guitar)

I just got a Vivid Yellow P5 with 44K and I replaced the tires today. Oh, btw, I'm from Ohio too. So we've probably been following similar paths. I settled on th Prox4's over ASX at the low end and Michelin Exalta a/s at the top. It seemed as if these were the 3 all-round m/s tires to beat.

www.1010tires.com inclundes ratings of far more tires than tirerack. Go there and compare these three and any others. You'll get customer reviews which can be filtered by vehicle.

Their rating scale is 1-5 not 1-10 but the Kumho and Michelin ratings still translate as comparable to tirerack. Kumho owners probably a bit less satisfied with wear and noise.

Exalto a/s is everyone's darling (Everyone with $$$) but the prox4 is right behind the exalta.

Specs: Go look. On just the Light Snow rating _ Michelin 3.6 (rated by the editors at4.0), Prox4 3.5. No doubt that Michelin is still is still tops. But I decided to save $200. The toyos struck me as a bit more sensitive to the tiniest cracks, they handle great, and seem to have less noise. (Thats based on a thirty mile ride.

So the jury is out, it may be Christmas before conclusions are reached. Stay in touch.

Tires, Stupidity, an Hangnails

Well I am a NOOOOObee!!
My post of a few minutes ago assumed all of you were still making your tire decisions, and I was helping.
But if all those posts were in 2004. You've probably bought another new set by now!
I'll blame it on a bad cold that has be up mistyping nonsense at 4am.
I do love the P5 over the 3series, it proves the zoom. So I haven't posted my last about my yellow 5dr.
BTW I indeed did buy the first rotary rx4 sedan in north texas in 1971. I believe tx, fl, and ca were mazda's test market. When I left the Army and returned to OH no one could service my car for about six months. I haven't considered a mazda again until now. So far I'm pleased (although back then they included a mazda logo enamaled keyfob/fingernail clipper) Something they should return to.
How many lives end prematurely due to automotive hangnail emergencies?? Oh, the humanity!!!
