I was told that Mazda Keys havea chip in them and they can only be replaced by the dealer. anyone have any knowledge of this??

Also, my car came with only one remote, is it possible to purchase additional remotes?

Yes, the Mazda3 has an immobilizer system which works with a chip inside the key. You can program up to three keys and three remotes, and you can get a key or remote from a dealer or ebay (just make it's the right part #).

the keys must be programmed on a WDS at the dealership to start and run the car

The sequence for getting the remotes to work is here. You can do the remotes without going to the dealer. It's kind of an experience to program the remotes yourself. The locking system goes crazy.

The way to program the key is here, but it's a bit more involved, and, depending on what they want to charge you, going through the dealership is easier. You're also forced to go through a dealership if you only have one key.

Great thanks! I found a remote on eBay. i will let you know if it works when it gets here. Bummer is. I only have one key. The dealer ship only had one key for the car as the P.O. Lost the other key.

it IS possible to handshake new keys on your own as chwilliam posted... but if someone explicitedly locked out the self learn feature from WDS, then you'll need WDS to handshake a new key and/or unlock the system
