I looked it up in the search and i just realized my car manual is a mazda6 manual not an MS6 one.

so im driving my car and on the dash display under the speedo, the word "KEY" appears in red. What does this mean? i thought it meant my battery on the smart key was dying so i pulled out my extra key, still same thing... and the car wont lock when i push the outside buttons only when i press the buttons on the key itself.

Any one know the problem? thanks

I was told that after so many key cycles with one of your 2 fobs you had to switch them to keep them in sync? Try to use the other one for a couple times then switch back and see if that clears it up.

nope. that means that one of your internal antennas has shorted out. just like mine have twice. the dealer will have to replace it and you'll be all set.

the normal progression from what i've experienced and seen is like this:

one door button stops responding to being pushed
all door buttons stop working
KEY comes on in all red (and stays on)
KEY goes off, still does not work
KEY comes on
etc.

that sucks!

Thank you though, for the info...

This is funny 'cause the exact same thing happened to me yesterday ... did the battery replace too to no avail. It's off that you can still use the remote button to unlock & lock. What my suspicion was is that with all of the snow we've had here lately, some of it has gotten up where 1 of the sensors is and either broken it or blocked it from getting a reading??

Let us know what solves it for u snooky.

its definetly the snow/ice/cold that causes it. i had mine replace both times in february

Yeah the samething happened to me about 3 weeks ago and they had to replace the button on my door and an antenna. The only thing that really sucked about this repair is they didn't have the part in and had to order it from Canada, so I was out of my car for a week.

Mmmm, so no one thinks the problem will go away once whatever snow or ice (I assume) is covering the sensor?? I may just wait until we get some warmer weather and see.

well the sensor for the KEY thing is in the steering column (atleast on the CX-9 and Mazda5) it is basically an immobilizer saying that the key isn't synced to the vehicle. I've had this problem installing a remote start until I properly synced the keys.

slightly different problem. the car will start and work fine, just the request buttons on the doors do not.

I know that's what was happening I could start the car but that was it. it was weird kind of confusing. maybe a different cause but same problem.

I just got my car back from the dealer yesterday. I had the same problem.

The smart key would work when I used it but the button on the door no longer worked. the red key light stayed on.

I called the dealer and they told me to bring it in. The problem is a wireless antenna located in the rear bumper.

Luckily I was still under warranty. They gave me a rental and within a day fixed it for free. Apparently this is a known problem.

i brought my car to Mazda and they told me they needed to order a replacement ant... and that they'd call me when it gets in, thing is my key works now and the light is no longer red ..

Mine's done the same thing too Snooky - did it at the dealership too of course where I felt like an idiot ("honest, it wasn't working just a few minutes ago"). It'll come back as mine did.

Thx for the other replies too - sounds like I'll need a new antenna.

they can "reset" the system which will allow it to work for a little while. don't worry, it'll break again.

they did the same thing to me when i took it in the first time. gave me my keys back, sent me on my way. i jump in the car and it worked....but then like a day later it had stopped again.
