Real HID

Hi.
I have always wanted to get a REAL HID kit, but i have never decided on which one i want to go with. Can anyone with HIDs tell me which is simply the 'BEST' aftermarket HIDs i can get?
What brand is best and how difficult is the installation?
Is it a DIY project?

Please post links and pictures of your car if you have real HIDS

Thanks!

:)

I bought the K2 8000k Plug and play kit, and it was exactly that, only hard part was getting the aim good. The best kits to buy are plug and play and use Hella, Phillips, or osram ballasts. My ballasts are hella.I am also using the hiper white bulbs that came with the headlights, just to use as a comparison. a good site to visit is-www.misterjung.com<img src="http://image1ex.villagephotos.com/pubimage.asp?id_=1661795" width=640 height=480>

arent HID the ones that take a few seconds to warm up, or are those like Xenon...my friends dad has a 350Z with Xenon and hte lights look so awesome on it

MikeBlueMP5 - thanks for the response. Your HIDs seem to be soo Green. I'm looking for the blueish purple hue. I want something Very similar to those found on a BMW X5/ 3 series/ Acura TL.
why didn't you change out the stock bulbs as well? it might be much better. How's the aim? And visibile at night?

Stealth5 - yes.

they look green because the wall in front of the car has a brown stained finish on it, in person they are really purple/blue, and better than the bmws and all, BMW= Big Money Wasted. Learned that one at work.

i always wanted to have real HID.
I think misterjung.com have nice HID's but some ppl said aiming is really hard to do.
is that a fitman problem or just aiming problem?

If you want the most light, stick to 4200k-5000k lights. If you care about looking cool, get 6000k lights. If you want dimmer lights, like blinding oncoming drivers and creating a lot of glare get 8000k lights.

Don't go with a plug and play system or anything like that.

Our housings weren't made for HID's at all. PERIOD. If you use a straight swap, you have a LOT of trouble aiming them properly (to keep from blinding on-coming traffic), not to mention dark spots and over bright spots.

A retrofit will replace our factory reflector/projector with one suitable for HID.

But if you don't have the money to shell out for a retrofit, then go for some plug and play system, but you can get into problems.

here's the link on the retrofits:

all of the pictures i looked in your photo album seems to be green to me. not blue/purple at all, but if you say it is, i believe you. I guess photos don't do it especially when it comes to high Kelvins.
Do you know if HIDs are availble with 'Auto leveling'?
Like you would see on IS300's and 3 series bimmers?
Or does that have nothing to do with the bulb?

in response to your question, I have to say YES. they are hella worth it even if they cost 500+ a pair. Not only the provide a better clarity at night, but also a suprizingly attention from people. I mean, who would think to have HID on a protege?! I live in a city where Civic and Interga roam the streets and for me to get any attention is Plus for me =) here's more pix...

Zombiefreaky you are so utterly wrong. I have the Plug and play and they work fine. The reason people don't aim them right is because they don't sit within the housing as well as other H7's because of the black composite housing you stick the light in. if you put them in without that they will come loose and aim higher. I got a lot of s*** for it from Semi's this summer driving down I-80. When I got back though I modified the black composite backing to fit around the new capsule. Now they have the oem beam pattern and never come loose. I was just looking at stuff last night to make them even better. Check these out.

I'm thinking of modifying my housing to put these in. I already have the ballasts and I could get the bulbs and a D2S converter for cheap. I think our cars would look bad ass with projectors.

nah you cant get those auto leveling systems unless you convert the housing. As far as I know the whole dang housing moves, and if not the whole thing then it is just the back reflector peice like ours. Once you get them aimed right you'll have no worries. It took me a while since I dont have a flat surface and a wall 25ft away to do a good job, but they are aimed and I get no flashes from others at night. I just bought my girlfriend a set from misterjung.com tonight. they are 379 shipped. Not a bad price since they use the best ballasts made, the bulbs are always replaceable. (according to all the sites about HID's) I might be about to buy me another set of bulbs from either misterjung or ebay. I am gonna wait and see what the lights look like in my girls s10.

so, how difficult is the installation anyway?
For a dumby like me, can i just pull out the stock headlight bulbs from my MSP, find a location for the ballast and stick in the bulbs that comes with the kit and i'm done?

misterjung's site is awesome.
after looking at it breifly, is it true that the higher the Kelvin's the lower the output of the light?
in reality, for example 10000K produces less light than say a 7000k?
The looks of the 7500k is exactly what i'm looking for...but 7000K seems to produce more light. I soo want!.

Yes, after about 5000K the higher the Kelvin rating the less the actual light output. So 7000K will actually produce more light then the 7500K. The bluer the bulb, the more glare off the road and light in on-coming traffic making it difficult for them to see. Here are some excellent HID resources to learn more:

I want HID for myself at some point, and when I go with it, I'll probably be getting something in the 5000K range. The most light output and the least glare for oncoming traffic and eye fatigue.

as for the install it isnt difficult. On the p5 we have two bulbs unlike the MP3/MSP. We have what I beleive to be a H4 plug with a H7 adapter on it. I in my case just had to remove the white harness peice (not cutting anything, using a small screwdriver to release them) and the kit came with what they call piano wires, they are one black wire and one white wire. they just have male ends on them and you connect them to the female ends you pull out of the white socket, get some good quality shrink tubing that you shrink with heat from a lighter or so, shrink it wrap it with electrical tape just for safety, and loom it thats all i had to do then I just mounted the ballasts. Not too difficult. Hard part was waiting for dark to aim them, then I had to find tha damn aim screw-took forever, I didnt know jack s*** about the car yet really, I had just got it. Its just one bolt on the back only for up down aim, no side 2 side. all in all Id say a good hour depending on the wiring job you do.
