Rain did a number on my MSP...

Yesterday I was driving in the hard rain we NE people got for about an hour straight coming home from CT to NJ. All of the sudden my car starts cutting out while accelerating at about 4k rpm and/or under moderate and high throttle. It turns out the car somehow somewhere sucked up some water. Today I took some pipes apart and found the MAFs a little moist on the inside. It seems to be running OK now that I cleaned and dried it out. Unless the cut moved to a higher rpm and/or a higher throttle pressure. I'm afraid to floor it yet. No other symptoms are present though. Remember my maf is on the pressure side. At first I though I blew that sucker but guess not/hope not atleast. Now I have to go back to CT arrrg. Too much driving damn it.

Do you have a CAI?

If i recall correctly you moved the MAF onto your hard pipes right?

No CAI. It looks like there're leaks between some of the hoses and that's how the water got in there. Granted if the MAfs wasn't placed between the hardpipes it wouldn't have gotten soaked, but it's not blown from extra pressure that's for sure.

What type of intake set-up do you have?

Just a cone with a little extension on the stock plastic pipe coming up the the headlight. I cut out the weatherstrip above the headlight for a charge of cool air to the filter. The filter itself is dry.

I would bet that since you removed the weatherstripping, that while driving at speeds the water got in through the filter and passed through your turbo, intercooler, MAF and into your throttle body. I would bet that the filter would dry pretty quickly due to the constant suction drying it out. Is your filter oiled liberally?

I haven't had any problems with the CAI either in any weather. I think CustomMSP's problem was a loose connection, not because his intake sucked in water or because his MAF is on the pressure side of the turbo.

Hopefully everything works out OK...the car is still running so it looks like you dodged the devil this time.

The filter was reoiled maybe 3 months ago, but it's not too oily now. Maybe I should reoil it.

could be a possible boost leak??? and even if some water got into the filter some how i dont think it would still be solid water once it pasted the turbo...the heat would of evaporated it already.....i think u got a boost leak after the turbo and water got in thru that

You cut off front side weatherstripping? Not a good idea. In motion you are probably creating vacuum for water to be sucked into your engine bay.

A couple days ago my intake sucked up a plastic bag and prevented my engine from getting any air. My car hiccuped a couple times and I pulled over and took it out.. and ever since then my car has been acting funny. The engine feels like its shaking and the RPMs drop all the sudden sometimes. :_( I'm so ashamed. Anyone know what I need to do to fix it? How many millions it's going to cost? etc etc? Thanks

Yeah, I retightened all the hoses, although they were all very tight except a few clamps, which I need to replace. The turbo/BOV is very loud now after I retightened everything. Turbo spools right up. The exhaust is very loud now as well, maybe from extra flow? I don't know, this s*** changes every day. It's amazing what modern technology/mechanics can survive. I'm using two rubber hoses that go on both sides of the maf because the silicone ones don't stretch. The mafs is a little wider than 2.5". I think that's where my problem is as far as leaks go. I'll have get better clamps there.
