So can anyone here who does autocross racing recommend a website where I can purchase a decent helmet to use? I'm not paying anywhere near $1000 for a helmet, so I'm emphasizing CHEAP. :D

I don't mind anything UNDER $500, so hopefully I can find at least a DECENT head gear in that price range. I'm not planning on making this a frequent hobby (got enough of side sports to keep me occupied) as it is pretty expensive to maintain. Just call me El Cheapo Chico, thank you. :D

From what I hear you can rent helmets, but I've heard it isn't the best option to go for as quite a few people wear them and I don't think they really wash those helmets, right? :p

In any case, I *believe* (matter of opinion here... LOL) I'm a pretty decent driver so I would like to see how those who actually practice it on a frequent basis look like out on those courses.

Also, being Mr. Cheap here and one who hasn't been out to an autocross before, how much wear can one expect to make on his tire? I'm imagining from what I skim through occassionally on internet boards, to be like a new set of tires after a few handful of autocross runs?? Am I exaggerating or is that pretty close to the truth?

I've always been interested in the course racing scene, but now that my car is actually broken in... I am sort of interested in taking a more personal involvement with the sport. My friend will probably hook us up with a friend of his who autocross frequently (in a pretty sweet looking yellow Z coupe) some where here near Austin (Kyle, maybe??).

Anyways, if you have helpful tips on what helmet and where to buy I'd really appreciate it. Thanks folks! :D

oh yeah

if you're doing autox for the first time, don't worry about tire wear, worry about that once you've run like 20-30 events on the same sets of tires.

tires DO wear out faster on autox course.

and autox, IMO, is much more fun that drag racing. MUCH MORE driver skill involved, and those skills learned in auto DO transfer into better and safer street driving :)

Thanks for the info and weblink! :D

I ride motorcycles also, so I bought a new helmet for my bike and autocrossing. I got an HJC CL 12 III for under $170. Works great for me, though sometimes I wish I had an openface for autocrossing.

Hope that helps!Heres a link

If you'd like a 3/4 open face helmet I just happen to have one lying around that I don't ever use. If you'd like it you're more than welcome to it.

Go for the M2000 rated helmet if you aren't going to do any Club Racing(door-to-door road racing) in the near future. You will save a lot of money this way. The helmet doesn't need to be SA2000 for autocross so getting the m/c helmet is a good way to go. I also use an HJC. I took the visor off and it is cool enough even in our super hot (100 deg. plus) Sacramento weather.
