spring/ball style MBCs have different material in the ball that allow for more specific and accurate boost control. Some are delrin/plastic, some are ceramic some are metal. The different type of ball accounts for varying prices on simple ball and springs MBCs.
Also, most electronic boost controllers use a solenoid style interruption response boost control, which is considered more precise and accurate for boost control than most 'bleed style' manual boost controllers.
A basic Hallman MBC can be had for around $60. Or you can spend $600 on Apexi AVC-R which is an electronic boost controller has an integrated RPM sensor and can vary boost according to engine speed, gear, and throttle position.
