Question about engine

OK I have read through a few threads but have not gotten a complete answer. Ok there is this thing ( i think it was called a silencer in another thread) that conects to the stock filter box. I have taken it off and I can hear a slightly better tone from the engine. What i want to know is that does the car work better with the thing on or off??? I mean does it suck HOT air in withot it or should it be fine without the thing.....and should there be ANY noticable power gains?

should not hinder or increase power without it. all it does is quite the intake sounds.

thanx thats what i wanted to know...also is ther a chance of water getting in there???or should i jst leace that peace that comes upp??? i ave also heard that there is two pieces??? i can only figure out one...

there's no better or worse chance of water getting in there...all that little piece does is quiet down the stock intake...technically speaking it could give a little more performance without it in there due to the less restrictive airflow but not noticable...

the intake is still well above the fender wall so pretty much no chance of water

If you keep the silencer off, and add a K&N panel filter, it will make a little bit of difference... Not much power wise, but it will rev slightly smoother at ~4.5K rpms, and give you a little more intake noise.

Yes there are two pieces. Upper one and lower one. I have removed both pieces, added a KN drop in filter, attached a Home Depot dryer hose to the snorkel from the stock air box, leading down through a factory cut slot, exiting under the front bumper. Kind of a wanna-be ram-air induction.
Now, EVERYONE says this is a joke, it's bs, it won't work. Well, I'm telling you IT DOES!:D It's not like a full CAI, which, I can't afford right now, hence the Home Depot Special.:D But, it is alot better than stock, and only cost about $39.00 total.

I will see if I can borrow a digi from a friend and ask someone to help me get them online.

Oh, another Mazda site has photo's, but, can't remember which one. I do remember they did this on an MP3. That's where I got the idea from.

Anybody seen this?
