Question about stop/start and different trim levels

'20 Sport '25 Turbo
Hey, we're shopping for a 2nd CX5. Loving our 2020 Sport and we need another car for the kids.

In looking carefully at the features online, it looks like "base up through Preferred" the cars don't have stop/start or cylinder deactivation.

Then the n/a engines "up from there" have cylinder deactivation and stop/start.

Then it appears that the turbos have neither of these.

We want Bose which pushes up into "above preferred", but we hate stop/start.

So my questions:
- do I have the stop/start "feature" mapping right vs trims?
- can you turn stop/start off and will it "hold" the setting across trips? Our Macan does that and it's great. Always off.

It doesn’t hold, it resets each time the car is turned off.

Hard to say about trim level to iStop since in the 2024 models it was more about when they were made than what trim they have.

I do believe that the turbos do not have it across the board.
 
Thanks! Is the "tell" the "iStop" button under the dash? In other words, if it isn't there, then the car doesn't have iStop?

And... IMO that really sucks that it doesn't "hold".
 
Yes. There is a button next to the lane departure warning that says “i-stop OFF”

If that button isn’t there, no istop.
 
The turbo CX-50s have iStop, so I'd bet it'll be (re)introduced on the turbo CX-5s again, if not already. As others have said, it resets each time the engine is started, but you can buy a fairly cheap plug-in module (~$30'ish) to disable it always. I did that for my CX-50 - I hated the iStop too :)

I have had CX5’s with iStop since 2014.

It truly is no big deal, and you quickly get used to it. Its a mental thing more than anything else.

Mazda’s implementation of this tech is extremely good, so much so that you would be doing well to get your foot off the brake and onto the accelerator before the engine has restarted and is ready to drive away.

Mazda’s unleaded fuel engines are programmed to stop #1 cylinder at tdc and when they restart using iStop, its a combination of starter motor and the cylinder being activated by fuel and spark that restarts the engine. Reducing the work of the starter motor.

Agreed, and in Mild Hybrid Mazdas it's even better, as the engine is restarting from an i-stop using the 24V lithium-ion battery in combination with the integrated starter generator, rather than the starter motor which is used to cold start the engine.
 
Update: Bought a 2025 CX-5 Turbo Premium today to add to the fleet. Kept our old 2020 Sport. Mazda has come a long ways in 5 years on these cars. And no stop/start 😀

My wife dailies a Macan S and she checked it out and sat in it and was like “wow, this feels every bit as nice as my car”.
 
We have been fortunate enough to bounce back and forth. I have a lot of history with Miatas as well as a variety of sporty German machines. I often choose the keys to the cx5 over our Macan or my 911. Love the blend of utility and fun to drive. No pretense or flex, just solid and prioritizing fun to drive. The one thing in common with Porsche and some bmw is driving dynamics but the German stuff has become way over complicated and lost the plot imo.
