Protege5 Police Chase

Great story....

I work for the local police department as a dispatcher and carry a police radio. I was sleeping thisafternoon getting ready to work nightshift tonight when I hear several loud bangs from the apartment next door to mine. I figured it was the maintenance guy since it was the middle of the day so I got up and walked the dog. While I was outside I saw several guys leave the back of the apartment that I had never seen before. My apartment complex is at the deadend of a road and everyone knows everyone else so these guys stuck out like a sore thumb. I walked back inside to put my dog up and grab my radio. I looked out the kitchen window and saw another guy leaving the back of the apartment carrying a box. I jumped in my Protege5 and took off up the street hoping to see where they went. I saw all three of the guys get into a Blazer and then leave convientently right in front of my car. I called it in on the radio and followed the Blazer. They immediatley figured out I was following them and tried to take off, but the Blazer isn't the race car I'm sure they wanted it to be. After about 10 minutes of weaving in and out of traffic and doing about 20-25 mph over the speed limit a marked patrol unit finally caught up to us and started chasing the Blazer. It pulled into a residential area and the driver jumped out and ran. 4 other people stayed in the Blazer and were arrested for B&E/Larceny. The driver was caught by our K9 unit trying to hide in the woods. They had taken 3 DVD players and some clothing which was all returned to my neighbor who was at work. Having a light and siren on the Pro5 would have made it alot easier. Trying to swerve in and out of traffic while chasing a car and trying to talk on the radio kept me pretty busy. Looks like I'll have to go to court to testify unless they all plead guilty, but at least we caught these guys. Most of the time they get away. I'm glad I got in the Protege5 instead of the 323 wagon.

Though if you had the wagon, you could have loaded it up with the stuff they didn't steal from the apartment...
(-;
Good job though

Yea...

Rule #1: Don't break into the apartment next to the guy that works for the police and has a radio.
Rule #2: Don't try and run in an SUV with 5 people from an AutoXer in a Pro5.

I took the racing stripe off the 323 so I could redo it, but it has been raining so it's back to around 70 whp right now.

not trying to be a dick here, b/c it is cool that you got them, but shouldn't you leave this work up to officers. You could have just as easily started a severe accident chasing down a car weaving in and out of traffic. You are a dispatcher, correct? Then radio to them and let them do that stuff, b/c you could have just as easily created a worse situation "swerving in and out of traffic while chasing a car and trying to talk on the radio " Sorry Just my humble opinion...

True, but you also have to understand that when I called it in when I first got behind the Blazer there were no officers even close to where I was. It took them 10 minutes to catch up to us. If I had just radioed it in and then went back to sleep more than likely they would have never caught the guys responsible and even tracking the vehicle back through the tag # would only give you the owner of the vehicle and it was probably one of the guys parents (none in the Blazer were over 18) and he could just claim that someone borrowed it. No one gets charged, my neighbor is out several hundred dollars (no insurance), and 5 people are out on the street thinking they can do it again. Now we have 3 felony warrants on subjects in jail, 2 warrants for aiding and abetting, my neighbor got all his stuff back, and these guys won't try it again in my apartment complex. There are a lot of should of, would of could of, what if's, that you can come up with, but thats all they are. Taking what I said and turning into driving recklessly would take a lot of exagerating. I never used the turn lane to pass. I never cut anyone off or made them slam on brakes to miss me. At one point I was over 100 yards back from the Blazer caught in traffic and could have easily got around using the turning lane to pass, but I didn't. I just waited till I could get through. There were a couple of double lane changes and exiting from the left hand lane, but never in a reckless manner. I knew that if I lost sight of them they would be gone and off scott free. In all truth I probably drive more recklessly going to the grocery store and back. Your comment definetly holds water and I hold myself in no way as some magical perfect driver, but this situation never got dangerous outside of anything you would see people do on a daily basis around here. Working for the police department also shows me how many people that break into houses we don't catch which is probably 90-95%. B&E's almost always happen when no one is around so there is no suspect info...this time everything just fell into our laps so it was pointless to let them slip away.

Nice (thumb)...now if we could have online scammers caught in the act ;)
No s***...I despise any criminal that would damage or take other people's property on purpose. My back bumper is scratched and my exhaust had to be redone after I chased down some shoplifters a few monthes ago. Unfortunately, they got away with several hundred dollars worth of shoes. The car they were in didn't have a license plate on it so we had nothing to go on. After they saw me following them radioing it in 2 people jumped out of the car and took off on foot and the car went the other way. It took about 10 minutes to get an officer to me that time too.
