I have been challengend to a race by a bottom of the line matrix thats stock and stick shift. My car is a automatic with exaust muffler and 2 and a quartering piping and a ingen cold air intake. Do you guys think I could win this race? How much horse power does the matrix come with? Any tips on how to take off faster?

2,800 lbs (P5 is 2,716 lbs)
So we have more torqe, and possibly more hp.
Its a pretty fair fight if you ask me...unless you run into one with the turbo or AWD. However, you can't get the AWD in standard.

i donno about a matrix.. but i do know.. that with my 18z on , subs in the back, 3 people in the car (auto with intake + exhaust)
i was able to spank a civic dx with a body kit and a spoiler.. now that my friend is a real race.. yeah baby. LoL

I raced the 130hp stick shift with intake and exhaust,and i beat him for a whole car. Also remember its not only the car also is the part behind the wheel. when is the race??? I'm going to Orlando (Sonics) on saturday with my girlfriend,she never been out there,and i would like to meet some of u guys from there. I'll leave to Orlando like around 7pm from Tampa, so see you there if u go!

well you all can ask Ryan about when we met up in TN ... he rides the MSP (orange) and knows how to handle it and when we left the parking lot of a gas station I really romped on my Mp5 and he could not catch me .. i was pullin on him even with my 18's so .. the Msp is a bad ass car which i would love to have but it truly could have used a bigger turbo or atleast been fine tuned a little more . also we both had passengers in the passenger seat ..so we both had extra weight
i dunno, but i can tell you that i test drove the 130 hp matrix xr (AT) before i got my p5. it felt like it accelerated a bit slower than our p5's. if he has a bottom of the line model, then im sure you can take him..............but street racing is bad..............

Typically, auto trannys are best left alone to shift themselves for racing. Load the trans at the line by holding your foot on the brake and giving it some throttle. I don't think wheelspin will be a problem so when the light turns green, release the brake and floor it! Try it a few times and you'll get the hang of it quickly.

but a track race should be ok. if your doing a curvy mountain race or something with crazy corners it's anyones game.

If he knows how to drive the car he should beat you. The fact that you have an automatic really slows the car down. Give it a shot though and let us know how it turns out
When I had my P5, I raced my brother in law with his Matrix XR.
We both had stick and we drive about the same meaning we drive stick very well. We took off at the light and I had him all the way to the next light. His front bumper stayed around my back side door. oh well a win is a win.

My next door neighbor (also a friend of mine) just bought a new Toyota Matrix XRS, which is the 6-speed version, 170-somethin' hp I think. Anyway, I have had my MP5 for awhile, and he always said that when he got his XRS, we had to race. Obviously, I laughed, and agreed, thinking he would never get it.
Well, he did, and now he wants to take me. My MP5 is pretty stock, save the new clutch upgrade from Mazda and the MS exhaust. I do have a 5-speed, however, so at least I don't have to worry about the automatic tranny problem that grafecks has. To me, the Matrix is like my biggest rival, and I have whooped up on them before, but never against my friend equipped with a 6 speed.
Should I go for it? Even if he does win, it's just a race between friends, so it doesn't really matter. The truth is, I just don't want to make the Mazda look bad.

Yesterday did get a chance to run some with a Matrix, carbon fiber hood, exhaust and 17's. Flat out busted him going up a steep hill.
And who says the Sport-shifts can't be fast.
Now it would be interesting to take him on some curvy rds...

Yeah, if he beats me in a drag, which everyone says he will, then maybe I should challenge him to keep up with the P5 in the curves...I know he can't do it.
