Protege 5 isn't that slow...

I dunno about u guys but I find my p5 slow. It has a problem or something because I can't nor my friends can make my p5 run faster than 18.00 flat at the track. I have a manumatic p5 with short ram intake and mazdaspeed exhaust for performance mods. Anyone know if it's just my p5 or all manumatic p5's are that slow or what cause I think it should be faster than that.

the automatic trans realy sucks alot of power away, the car is not any faster if you shift it yourself either, The auto tranny shifts where the engine has lost most of its power anyways so keeping it gear longer does not help.
most cars with the automatic transmissions are going to be slow. Unless its somthing that has 8 cylinders

well my friend's mazda6 4cyl auto ran 16's yet I ran a 18 flat. stock manual p5 runs 16 so being 2 secs off makes me wonder if there's something wrong with my car.

aric thanks again man.
no problem
I'll try and print off some of the pictures the parts catilog at work has, I'll email them to you, hopefully it should make this swap alittle easyer for you

well what's some mods that will help without swapping out the tranny or boosting it?

well im pulling it from a car in tampa so ill have some what of an idea. I dont know if well be able to get the tranny out though... no crane or a jack high enough...

I think that if you're in a P5 and lose to a Civic EX that someone might need to take a driving course. I had a Civic EX previous and this car is definitly faster.
a pretty close race with taking a civic EX with a protege 2.0 5-speed. I believe the car with the better driver would have the benefit.

the protege 2.0 5-speed can run a 1/4 miles from 16.8-17.8 stock.

our cars are not slow, they are horse power challenged!

give them the extra 40 HP like the speed has and it is another car......can get expensive doing that though!!! if you are looking for a fast car, don't get a protege.

Or there's always a turbo. I'll be boosting high by the summer.

you could always put the car on ramps first
have a jack under the trans and lower it down, and then gently lean it onto the floor

I dont know how heavy the protege trans is, but when I did my engine two people could lift mine without much trouble and I could easily drag it around on the floor by myself

custom turbo kit > MSP

dont bother buying a MSP turbo kit from a dealer, dealer cost for the turbo is $1300. thats with 0 markup.

we get alot of people that want to put the bose audio system in their 6's, all the parts alone cost $3300 and you have to figure in labor and taxes

yeah, the MSP turbo is kinda bad...I'd get Hi-Boost, or MAM sleeper or Thumper or any of the other kits out there..or for the best result, go full custom, and get what you want.

EDIT* Holy s***, I said the two worst things in one sentence...HI-BOOST and MAM..goo god, here comes the flames and the xxx vs. xxx s*** again...(sleep)(jerkit)

Agreed, I have found the performance of the car to be more than enough. My last car was a Civic LX, so this one feels real fast.

For the price, I think it is a pretty darn good car. The handling reminds me of the old CRX.

Reading through the forum I keep seeing posts about how slow P5's are. I don't think it's that slow of a car compared to other cars in its class. I'm sure this has been covered before, but i don't understand how people are losing to Civic EX's and getting blown away by SI's. With a few basic bolt ons a P5 easily keeps up with both of the mentioned cars.

Can't speak for everyone but I think people are talking about stock.

I am.

Protege5s are slow.

It isn't a speed demon out of the box, it has some potentional though the market research isn't here nor will truely be here to persue it. We have gotten lucky with some Vendors helping out recently though. But it has balls however more power is always nice.
