Protege 5 Air Intake Hose Cracked!

Okay, so I'm finally fighting a few problems on my protege 5 after owning it for several years.

For one, my air intake hose is cracked, and will need to be replaced. Normally I would be asking for a good aftermarket upgrade, but I'm unemployed right now, and have to do things on a budget. Can anyone suggest a cheap place to get this?

Also, my engine threw a code the other day. It may be related to the cracked air intake hose, but I just wanted to see if that's even possible.

I took it to Autozone, and it said: "lean air/fuel ratio bank 1", and gave me these suggestions:

Low fuel pressure
Large Vacuum leak
Dirty/defective MAF sensor
Engine Mechanical condition.

The car wasn't running rough or sluggish when the check engine light came on. Do you think it's possible that the air hose being cracked could be the problem?

Thanks

Yea it will throw a code if you boot is torn. Mine is doing the same thing. If you clean the boot with some alcohol you can wrap some electrical tape around it for a temp fix. That is what I did to my car and it lasted me about a year. I found a boot on amazon for about $30, plus shipping.

my car had this exact problem, I fixed it with the electrical tape and it worked pretty good, then my dad saw it and made me take it to the dealer to et it replaced, all in all it came out to be about 400 dollars out of my pocket because my dad didnt like my "fix", it was money well wasted because I ended up putting a SRI about 2 months later

Thanks guys for the replies! Yeah, I already had the duct tape repair on it, but the hose cracked even more, and now just needs to be replaced.

I found this one, for really cheap, but I'm not sure if it'll fit.

https://www.amazon.com (commissions earned)

It claims that it fits an 02/03 protege 5, but it says that it fits a 1.6, and we have 2.0 engines. Think it'll work?

Yes, it'll fit.
Mine was cracked as well so I did the black tape fix a few months ago but it finally gave up. I cut out the bad sections and replaced with hard pipe(exhaust). Cost was nothing as I had the pieces in my "junk" box.

using exhaust pipe, simple yet effective. way to think outside the box. :) I may need to do this soon also, my boot broke and has been taped back together for several months already

Here's what I did. (Yeah, I know the engine is dirty. It's winter here.:))
mazda air intake.webp

The hose in the Amazon link will not fit, you must have the correct hose for the 2.0. My hose cracked on my P5 and I ordered an intake to replace it but it was wrecked before I installed it.

Order it from rockauto.com. $30-$35 at your door.

This is a great site with great customer service and very reasonable shipping sharges. 8 time out of 10, I buy here instead of my local autoparts-they are that good.

Okay, I ended up replacing the intake hose with a Dorman 696-601, and of course the 90 degree elbow connector snapped when I tried to remove it, so I replaced it as well. (I replaced it with a universal straight vacuum connector.)

I'm still getting a check engine light, but it's idling smooth, at around 600rpm, and I can't figure out what the problem is. I heard that if it's a dirty MAF sensor, you can unplug it, to see if it runs better, but I see little difference when I unplug mine. Is there a trick that I'm not getting? How do you reset the code, or does it reset on its own??
