I'm not sure if you mentioned it already...but would you mind telling us how much this rebuilt engine is running you..? Sounds like an uber-sweet setup!

Labour is a sponsorship deal, so I will leave that unspoken for now. But it's definitely not free!

I will work out the costs...I have a spreadsheet of parts...yes...a spreadsheet. Damn this is a bad sign. I'll get back to you.

And in my one year of racing a rotary, I have gained about 5 years of rotary wisdom, I swear. lol Definitely a ton more to learn, but it's a great learning experience!!

If we paid list price for everything, it would be well over $6000 for parts alone. Thank god for sponsorship discounts and used parts off of forums!

Our total bill for this year is much more, due to buying a new exhaust and a few other goodies, and paying shipping, labour, etc.

Motorsport is an expensive hobby!... i swear sometimes i'd be better off being a herion addict than a motorsport addict from a financial standpoint. :P

Theres an old saying in motorsport though...."if you want to make a small fortune racing cars, start with a large fortune"

its all good fun though, and rewarding seeing your hard work come together.

I can't even imagine the total cost of funding your own race car...But I bet when you actually get to the "racing" part...It all becomes clear and definitely worth it! (rockon)

That's why you cover your eyes and put that debit card number in the # field and hope your account doesn't collapse from cardiac arrest lol. But yeah, once you get in the car and have the confidence that it's as well set up as possible, it's a good feeling :)
 
There are guys in my series who race until their Visa can't hold anymore, and then their season is done and they go into "pay it off" mode. lol

With us, we budget for it. It is our entertainment budget for the year (we don't party, drink, go on vacation lol). It's VERY expensive (probably $10,000+ a year), but it is a fun time and it's something we do together. It could be done cheaper, but we like to have a nicer car with nice gear on it. There are guys there who actually drive their cars to the track and race, then drive home. Little $3000 CRX's that only require you to put gas in them and change the oil every so often. So much cheaper, but the class we run in, all of the cars are much better prepared, faster, modded, etc, instead of running in stock type classes.

Discounts help, friends volunteer to crew for us, and a lot of our own time goes into labour. In the end, it is worth it.

This year, we're thinking of the new engine as an investment in saving money from switching to pump gas. Race fuel was at least $1200/year.

Other costs:
Tires (at a discounted rate from a broker - slicks): $1500/year
Entry fees: $1550/year
Licenses: $340/year
Other misc. fluids, etc: $500/year (High end racing fluids (royal purple, redline, etc), amsoil premix)
Brakes: $250/year

Camping: $500/year

Gas for tow vehicle, gas for race car

And we do about $5000 worth of work or more each winter updating, upgrading and rebuilding.

I'm assuming the old motor ran on av-gas (C14, or C16 or something?)? alot of the money in av-gas usually goes to EPA's as a "lead tax" (at least, it does here) - which is what hikes the price. Going to pump gas should more or less pay the motor back in a few seasons...hopefully by next rebuild you'll be in front.

It used to run on VP C12. 108 octane leaded. It's around $600/54 gallon barrel, and we need at least 2 a year. We get this as a "discounted" price because a bunch of us buy together to get a certain volume at 10% off.

Yeah, we spend every spare cent on racing too, and love every minute of it. It's not a hobby, it's a way of life.
 
Haha I haven't been on a vacation in three years, since we started with this stuff. Boy oh boy....I'm not sure how I keep doing this!

Who needs a vacation when you spend all your time and money racing?! You can rest when your time is up. ;)

Yeah it is a bit heavy but we need something that can stand up to some abuse lol (i.e. heat and potential off-track excursions). Our current one (HKS) leaks and stuff, and it's not true dual. This one is true dual, and at no point do the pipes cross. And it's pretty lol.

Oh and our race director is measuring noise limits this year, so this one has a presilencer in it which the HKS didn't.

And the pics don't do the oil pan justice. It is a piece of beautiful machine and casting work.
 
And our Atkins Rotary order came in last night with the oil injection nozzles for the eccentric shaft.

Unfortunately, all of the big stuff (rotors, e-shaft, housings) were shipped directly to the builder, so no pics of those.
