Project RX7 Race car - Progress so far!

YThis one is true dual, and at no point do the pipes cross. And it's pretty lol.

it is a pretty piece... quick question on rotary exhausts - my rotary exhaust theory is a little rusty.

In piston engines, where duel exhaust pipes are desirable (such as in V configured engines, where 1 header on each bank has an its own exhaust pipe - not talking about inline engine configurations with twin pipes which have a splitter....) a "balance" pipe or "X" pipe are often used to help prevent unwanted harmonics between the 2 pipes (the pipes have a tendency to "sing" off of one and other without the use of a balance pipe)....

is this not an issue with a rotary engine configuration? or not a consideration given that its a race exhaust?

I have heard that theory about a balance pipe before, but I'm fairly certain that these do not open into one another and if they do, it may be in the presilencer. As you suspect though, it may be a rotary thing, or a race exhaust thing (it is actually a true road race exhaust whereas the one we used before was a street based performance exhaust).

that explains it sort of (well, not really...would be interesting to know if balance pipes are a requirement of rotaries...) - being a race exhaust, driver and passanger aural comfort are not a key concern.... many race cars (not necessarilly road race cars.....) are open exhausts and make noise that would perforate unprotected ear drums....

damned nice looking exhaust...shame it'll be under the car and not on show :P

Aural comfort is definitely not a priority in race cars. lol

There's a reason we bring earplugs. ;)

haha... i knew i was forgetting something....

no wonder i'm half deaf...

WHAT?!

The engine builder now has all of the parts.(nailbyt)

The suspense is killing me!!!

Well we got a few of our crew down for the weekend to help (bribing them with karting and homemade spaghetti and garlic bread, and bacon and eggs), and here's what happened:

Unhooking everything:

It's out!

Looks pretty empty!

Wow that's small!

Now it's time to clean up the engine bay and paint it nice and white.

(bump) for updates!

Great pics of the pull-out process...Can't wait to see the "Spinning Doritos" swapped in :p

How long did it take your crew to pull-out the engine?

Took maybe an hour? Wasn't very long.

One of them is coming this weekend to help me prep the engine bay for some fresh paint and prep everything for when the engine is ready.

We're expecting the new engine at the end of March hopefully. I will have plenty of pics of it before it goes in. :)

Got some photos from the engine builder:

Race rotor bearing installed:

They used Electro-Discharge Machining for the apex seal lands, because they needed to be enlarged for RX7 seals (they're RX8 rotors)

He should be adding the bridge port soon.

More to come!

I know what I'll be dreaming about tonight...Great pics...Thanks for sharing! (2thumbs)

What sort of numbers do you expect to pump out at the crank with the new setup?

Nice #'s for going NA and I'm sure your 7 won't tip the scales to much...

Btw...Did you happen to slap the site decals on the car yet? If so...I'd love to see (pics)

Ps...Bring on the videos!!! :D

230 whp, 270ish maybe at the flywheel?

and BAP BAP BAP BAP BAP BAP BAP BAP

(at idle).

230 on pump gas isn't anything to sneeze at.... high revving NA rotary meth beasts can, as far as i know, only better that by 25 odd %... for essentially a mild mannered port job 230 at the wheels is pretty unreal.

BAP BAP BAP on a bridge port is cool.

Onset of concussion from listening to a periph port is heaven though (or maybe its something about being high on unburnt methanol fumes....???) ;)

Yeah the car weighs 2300lb with almost a full tank of gas.

And the decals are in my pile of "to-do" stuff....a couple other decals too. I will take pics when they go on, been trying to find the ideal spot for them.

Videos will come when the engine gets here. :)

Yeah we'll be running 91 octane pump fuel (that's what supreme is here). We can't get 94 octane.

Not bad #'s I agree. There will be a lot into this engine, but it should be worth it. Now if I will be able to figure out how to not stall it with an 8lb alum. flywheel and a carbon/kevlar stage 2 clutch. (nailbyt)
