Project Protege #2: A Mod Diary

After my next major update that'll me at the end of the week (when I get my computer back) I'm going to start inquiring around about sponsorships I think.

I explicitly told the sales rep when I bought my car, "If I see a dealership tag on the back of the car I will be talking to your manager about refunding my deposit....I am not paying $16,000 to be a moving advertisement."

Car looks amazing good luck on the rest. When I bought my car I told them the same thing. If they want to advertise, fine...just pay me for it.

Update! (finally)

So I finally found time around work to download my pictures from my camera, and post an update. I know it's been a while, but I didn't have time.

As promised the completion of my stereo install on the friday before I left:

Alright so with the luxury box in, and the metal stereo pocket in place, I wired everything up, connected it all and slid the radio on in there:

It's all in and I have my fingers crossed that it works!

Then I went back to work on the speakers. I finally picked up my new rear speakers, JL Audio TR650's.

Since the speaker wire was already pulled, I went straight to pulling the door panels off to sound deaden:

I used one full square on each. Then I went ahead and connected up the speaker, no major difficulty.

Same on the left:

After that I went ahead and put the door panels back on the rear, and started pulling the fronts again to fix the damn crossover, and to add some more deadning.

I came up with this rubber padding, used to pad under carpet, glued to the back of the door panel to stop the X-over from tapping it:

Then I went down to my shop and manufactured this bracket to screw into the door frame to house the X-over. Measured twice, cut once:

turned out really well, doen't hit the window, rattle, or interfere:

while I was in there I took the time to add some sound deadning directly behind my speakers on the inside of the door panels.

With thsi all done to both doors, I put the panels back on and moved on to the Trunk, for the amp.

So I came to a delema, I want my amp to be fiberglassed onto the side of the trunk but
A) I'll be getting a new Amp; and
B) the fiberglass isn't ready yet.

So my interm soloution was to mount it to the back of the seat.

With the wiring all run, and a circuit breaker under the hood, I was all set to go.

This is how it turned out:

You can see that my distribution block is now a nice black. I decided to spray paint it from the ugly see through teal it was, to a more suitable colour.

I also added a temporary switch panel to house the switch that runs my DVD player in dvd mode. The switch panel will be fixed, I just did not have the time to go into detail,

by now it was 1 am, and guess what? I was leaving at 645 AM bright and early, the next morning.

Time to pack!

I made it to bed by 4 am for 2 hours, none to shabby. Hard to believe you can pack your entire life into a car.

I have some more mods waiting now:
MSP springs, Ground wire kit, P7 Dead Pedal, Lower grill
that i'll be working on over the summer, next priority is tockico blues so I can get this suspension started.

End of Summer Update

Well here is my update for the remainder of the summer for what I have installed while I was away. It was difficult to find time to do anything, so I was lucky to get done what I did.

First was my AEM Intake:

Install went in easy, was simple to do, take out the old airbox, and put the new one in, took barely any time, and I've had no problems with functionality, CEL's or anything else of that nature.

While I had the entire airbox out I did the.....

Ground Wire Kit (Thanks 1sty !)

Install was none too difficult, you just have to make sure you have the right tools for the job. Having the Airbox out made it very easy to get the engine and tranny bolts.

I know, I know, My engine bay is filthy, I plan on degreasing it this week. It has a trip to ontario to PEI to Ontario and back to Halifax worth of road grime in there.

Now we all know I have a leather addiction (not in that kind of way fruitcakes) so I had to get rid of the bad stock Shift Boots for some Leather

Shift Boots (Thanks Shaun)

I opted for red stitching to match my exterior, and they turned out great. Again very easy to install, and it took very little time to do. I plan on getting a short shifter and new shift Knob asap, I was going to order one from protege garage, then it went down (the site) for a short time, and I got of track with comming home (expect an order at the end of this month after I pay tuition).

My last project of the summer was to replace the broken lower front grill that came with my car.

Lower Grill (Thanks MazdaSpeedster)

Now you can't see it very well in the picture, but that's fine, it's just solid black with black trim, it looks good, and it went in nice and easylike.

So thats all for now. I ahve a P7 Deadpetal to install this week, and I may have a nice suprise as well by the end of the week, stay tuned!

wow man, that looks really good, all subtle yet practical mods...final touch in my opinion is to lower it and get some nice summer wheels...but i guess in canada thats not too practical....either way, good work!
