Project Pay2Play: My Eunos Cosmo has arrived!

If you want the end all turbo book pick up "maximum boost" by corky bell. Some of it may be over the head of somebody who knows the basics but as you get more in depth with the harder stuff it all makes sense.

thats a great book - but its a little dated in what it says...formulas etc still hold up - but theres some giggle worthy passages throughout....

Thanks for the heads up but note that I mentioned I already had that bad ass book! :D

* One of my first orders on Amazon back when they started was https://www.amazon.com/dp/ (commissions earned) (a classic and must have for all car/FI enthusiasts). I've been wanting to pick up a boost related book again and came across this one...Published in '08 with a foreword by Gale Banks...(thumb)

Just came back from dropping off the Cosmo for some maintenance TLC at my friendly Mazda dealer...On the check list:

* Oil
* Spark Plugs
* Cooling System
* Brake Pads
* Brake Fluid
* Boost Pressure Leaks?
* Tires

My plan was to make sure Pay2Play is in perfect health for the trip to the upcoming "7's Meeting" at Central Circuit on May 2nd but it seems they randomly changed the date to July 11th and I just noticed...Which sucks, since I scheduled that day specifically for the meet...:(

In anycase...I'm going to double check the dates...Seems there is another event called "RE WARS" that should be awesome also but it's going down at tracks quite far from my side of Japan...At EBISU Circuit (Fukushima Prefecture) on May 31st and at Tsukuba Circuit (Ibaraki Prefecture) on July 7th.

If they keep changing the dates and or I can't make it to these events...I'll proceed with the next stage of upgrades I've got planned...:D

Time for a MAINTENANCE UPDATE! :D

Well, it turns out that the Cosmo needed new belts because they were starting to dry up and crack from old age. The crew at my friendly Mazda Dealer also found that the fuel lines (rubber parts) were starting to also dry up and harden. They told me, the lines need to be replaced in the "near future".

Eventually, the boost lines will need to be replaced as well with either rubber or silicone lines.

I'm happy to report though..besides the above issues, Pay2Play is in excellent shape! (2thumbs)

Here's the current situation:

* Oil - Changed
* Spark Plugs - OK
* Cooling System - OK
* Brake Pads - OK for now
* Brake Fluid - OK
* Boost Pressure Leaks - OK for now
* Tires - OK

While picking up my ride from the Dealer, I finally took home the Eunos Cosmo Badge Set I ordered eons ago. I bought these parts as spares in case I need to replace the current ones but also if I ever get the Cosmo repainted, I want to replace the current badges with fresh ones at that time.

Check these beauties out...;)

Eunos Cosmo Fuel Line Diagram from Mazda

If I have time this weekend, I plan on bringing in Pay2Play to the Dealer to replace those fuel lines and continue with upgrades plans from the fall (Stage II & III). (thumb)

Any word on power output now you've got the boost controller? :)

Good question...No official word yet...Haven't been to a dyno but based on #'s I've gathered on the net from fellow EC owners running similar mods...I would hope that Pay2Play is currently pumping out at least 300 rwhp (225 kw at the wheels).

Could be more or less though...Won't know until I get 'er to the dyno! :D

Thanks! :D

Hurry up and dyno it then ;)

would be keen to know at what point the 20B becomes "undrivable". all engines have a point where if you mod them past it, they seem to become rather piggish to drive - they lose a sense of refinement and become rough and difficult to live with. Whilst 90% of the cars out there this isn't an issue for (its just a sacrifice one makes), for something as unique as the cosmo, i'd think keeping it refined and nice would be the order of the day.

given the innate balance of a rotary engine, i'd think you could push it quite hard before any vibration or harshness would become detectable but not having even driven a modified rotary, I wouldn't know :P

Still, i think it'd be safe to assume you could take it to the 500hp at the wheels mark (hey, its a nice number!) and still be able to live with the car on a day to day basis ... though perhaps not the fuel bill :P

The hard part is keeping it quiet, which becomes and issue because the best way to make power from a rotary is to get it breathing.

What I really like about that pic.. yes the Cosmo is AWESOME... but the fact it has an RX8 in there too is pure sex... to bad its not an FC :) lol

Keep it clean.. looks nice!

Thanks man...Yeah that RX-8 in the background is also lookin' reaaaal good...I really dig the look of the latest RX-8...(thumb)

I don't think I've got a pic of the Cosmo and a FC near eachother...but I do have a pic of the Cosmo and one of the cleanest & meanest FDz I've ever seen...:D

Interesting question...Based on my experience driving the Cosmo/20B for a little while now and what I've heard/read...The 20B is capable of MAJOR POWER but once you start messing around with various porting techniques THAT's when you start to sacrafice drivability (and reliability). Also...Running a monster single turbo will probably NOT help drivability/streetability...lol.

That said..It seems if you keep 20B relatively stock internally but upgrade the turbo setup and all supporting parts (intake, exhaust, IC, aftermarket EMS etc) THEN you can pump out major power and retain solid drivability.

I would assume that 500hp at the wheels is totally doable without porting...IMO it's all about proper tuning...I don't think it would be impossible for me to attain 400whp simply with the addition of a high flow/capacity FMIC and an aftermarket EMS system on top of my current mild mods (intake, exhaust and EBC)...All the while maintaing solid drivability.

In fact...I would say that with the right mods and proper tunning the 20B is EVEN SMOOTHER and MORE RESPONSIVE...Improving and enhancing its stock driving character...That has been my experience even with mild mods! (2thumbs)

My current plan is to enhance the 20B...Not turn it into an undrivable unstreetable high matienence monster...:p

The hard part is keeping it quiet, which becomes and issue because the best way to make power from a rotary is to get it breathing.

(mswerd) Even with just the MAZDASPEED exhaust...When I start 'er up...It's LOUD but in a good way...Really healthy & brawny but in a walled environment like an indoor garage...Man is it LOUD...lol! Of course, once the 20B warms up...It's very tolerable around town...Just loud enough to be taken seriously...;)

When I get tired of listening to the Alpine...I just put the windows down and listen to the sweet vocals of 3 Roaring Rotors...:D

NRRfrogmanP5 came up with this great idea to send around a Mazda Forums (Mazdas247.com) Traveling T-Shirt where each Member signs it and sends it to the next person. :D

I got it last week, signed it, took some pics and sent it out yesterday to fishdonotbounce.

Checkout the thread here and get on the list to sign it...Plus here's a pic preview...<label for="rb_iconid_2">

Also, the 3 rotor fender emblem.... Does it only go on the left fender and not the right?? My front clip had one but it only was on the left fender not the right.. Just wanted to double check..

Last time I tried to order a Cosmo badge they where "Nil stock" for every colour except yellow. So I have a spare yellow badge floating around somewhere as the buyer changed his mind.

As for the 3-Rotor badge. it was standard on the lhs only. Dont ask why, its a Japanese thing.........(hand)

I have since fittedn a new badge to the rhs of mine.

Mazda did the same with the previous HB Cosmo. The "Cosmo" badge was located on the lhs rear quarter only.

Many years ago I was told a "theory". That its a prestige thing. A Cosmo overtakes you & the slower car gets to see the name. The Cosmo then gets overtaken & the faster car cant identify it. Sounds stupid but its the only explaination I have heard.

COOL! Thanks for that info Dave!

Well, I'm finally at home and I could get you my VIN number.. I'll pm that to you in a min..

My vin is JCES-100290 :)

Thought I might post your actual build day according to Mazda records. Handy tid bit.........(hump)

JCES-100290

Shows the slow sales at the end. Mine is just 100 Cosmo's away from yours (JCES-100190) yet was built 6-months prior. (31-JAN-95)

WOW! Very interesting.. Dave, How many cosmo's do you think are left in the world (just 20B Cosmos)?

I read somewhere (maybe your site) that 700 or so??

My Cosmo is currently at the Dealer to have maintenance work done as well as some previously planned upgrades...I plan on dropping by soon to check the progress...I'll ask if they can do business directly with you...Stateside.

As for the 3 rotor fender emblem...As Dave posted below...It only came on the left side...I once had a talk about this with my friend when I was ordering the emblems/badges but I don't recall coming to any solid conclusion...That "theory" that Dave posted does make some sense when I think about it...Having driven in Japan...The right (or far right) is the passing lane and all the people who like to drive fast or can drive fast (those with sizable and powerful vehicles) often use the right lane to pass the normal or slowpoke drivers (of which there are many...especially with kei/mini cars).

Keep in mind that there is a real hierarchy on the road in Japan...Larger faster vehicles often get their way without much or any resistance from smaller less powerful cars.

Perhaps Mazda felt that the 20B name should not be "shamed" or viewed when another vehicle passes the Eunos Cosmo...That only when an EC is in its proper place (the passing lane) should the 20B name be visible...lol...Who knows but it certainly adds to the EC's mystique! :D

(ohsnap!) Thanks Dave! Very cool...Now I know Pay2Play's Bday...haha...(birthday)

It would be awesome to see pics of the Eunos Cosmo assembly line when it was in action back in the early 90's...I'm sure someone at Mazda Japan has pics.

Weren't the 20Bs basically hand built? I wonder how much of the EC was "hand built" because clearly they were made in limited numbers and encompassed a lot of new technology for the time.

Great question...I often wonder this myself!

Even in Japan...In 5 years or so...I've only seen 5 or so "in the wild" (total...13B & 20B alike)...I see Ferraris, Lambos etc at least a few times a month in comparison.
