Project Pay2Play: My Eunos Cosmo has arrived!

What a beautiful car. Amazing how it maintains its class and beauty over the years. Very few cars retain that kind of classic beauty. Heh, class+beauty=Classic beauty

G'day from DMRH

I have only just found this web site/forum due to a link via the RX8club.com forum

Great to read you have a series-II Type-SX. Whats the VIN on your one....?

Mine is JCES-100190 (manufactured JAN-95)

REgards

DMRH! Welcome to Mazda Forums...Glad you found us...Your site is an awesome resource for JC Cosmo fans...I really enjoyed reading your build-diary...Too bad you haven't updated it in eons! :(

My vin is JCES-100290 :)

In regards to your desire to update to the DEFI gauge system. I think you can get digital version of those gauges & if thats the case, then have you considered the possability of fitting them on the passenger side behind the smoked perspex. There is plenty of room & its a straight forward job cutting out the plastic backing to get the gauges installed.

I have done it to my Cosmo, albiet in "boost" form only so far but if you view the www.dmrh.com.au web site & check the "My Cosmo" pages, you will see what I mean

Here is a pic of the finished product too.

Thanks for the suggestion...I recall reading about that mod in your build-diary but after considering multiple locations...I decided on the glove box because I need a place to mount the "Control Unit II" that is hidden but easily accessible...Plus the defi-link display uses buttons to control its multiple display features which means I can't mount it behind the perspex.

The glove box will serve as a sort of "diagnostic" center hidden for normal cruising but accessible for times when more engine info is needed :) One of the cool features of the link display is that I can access multiple sensors (provided I have them installed) from one unit instead of having multiple gauges.

It's similar to what Blitz and HKS offer for monitors and Navi setups but I want a dedicated source for engine info...so that I don't have to switch between audio, video, navi AND engine info on the same display.

You are certainly in a great position for accessing whats available for these cars, here down under. Its case of PAY THROUGH THE NOSE for parts from Japan or manufacture it yourself.

Love your Auto-Exe intake pod. The most desireable pod filter for a Cosmo ever. Damn shame they are AU$1300 landed.........(dark)

REgards

Yeah...As a Eunos Cosmo owner...It's a plus to be living in Japan and it doesn't hurt that one of the largest Mazda Dealers in Kansai is a 5min walk from my place...This particular Mazda Dealer is known for Rotary work and the occasional JC Cosmo visit :)

I love my Autoexe intake as well :p I noticed that most Cosmo owners opt for a more traditional cone filter setup but then again I can understand why...The Autoexe is actually really expensive for an intake but it's a really nice piece and gets the job done really well (2thumbs)

Its very common for the rubber hoses to fatigue over the years, go brittle & crack releasing vacum / boost signals to the various actuators & soleniods.

Replacing all the hoses under the manifold is a good idea now the Cosmo is ageing. Have a few spare soleniods with you as you will break their nipples when attempting to remove the baked on rubber hoses. I usually break 1-2 when asked to perform jobs like this for Aussie Cosmo owners but was breaking 3-4 on the first few attempts.

Fixing the hoses issue gives better boost response & makes the engine behave much more civilised. They also smooth out the 1st-to-2nd turbo transition.

REgards

Thanks for the info...I've got a couple questions about this...Is there a silicone kit out there of high quality that will fit or can fit on the 20B-REW?

Plus...How long does this sort of job take you and how much do you charge? I'd like to get a ballpark figure as reference so I know what I'm getting into here in Japan.

Great badge I say. Good taste on its position too.

Its hard to spot in this pic but its the only one I have that shows it & the right side boot seemed the only logical position

REgards

Cool...Looks good on your ride as well...I hadn't noticed you had the same badge before...When I first got the Cosmo...I wasn't sure if I wanted to keep it...but it didn't take long for the badge to grow on me and now it seems a natural part of my Cosmo.

Thanks for dropping by...Don't be a stranger!

G'day from DMRH

In regards to the zero updates. Wife has popped out baby #2, purchased an RX-8 as a family car & the Cosmo now lives 15km away at my unit in its garage. (no, the tennant doesn't have a garage key) So I hardly get the chance these days to "play" with it.

Since the RX-8 sits in the garage at home, its been getting the attention. No Cosmo attention means little or no updates on the site. Grants Cosmo however is always close to him & he is always updating it so keep a close eye on his eunos.com.au web site.

Right now, we are trying to get Do-Engineering to fix a mistake on their 8-bit ECU upgrade. It appears they have the old RE-Amemiya REDOM mini boards after RE-Amemiya dropped their 8-bit ECU upgrades but have gotten it wrong so the ECU got sent back.

In regards to the hose upgrade. I'll charge a Cosmo or FD RX-7 guy between AU$600 - AU$900 depending on how many soleniods break in the process but its a very labour intensive job that requires plenty of patience, a couple of long extention long- nose-pliers & more patience. The 1st time I did every hose on a Cosmo it took me a solid 8 hours, now I do them in 5-6 hours

If you use silicon hoses, the quality is higher but they sheer/split easier. If you use the rubber ones, they take a beating but will fatigue & crack sooner. One way I slow the process is to raise the bonnet when I pull over. A mates place, the garage, almost all places that aresecure. This way you dont get the heat spike under the bonnet when the engine is turned off.

Thanks again for all the info! I've been all over eunos.com.au recently...He has got tons of cool and updated info on there...Definitely boomark material! (2thumbs)

I hope everything works out with the ECU upgrade situation...I was surprised to see that RE-Amemiya stopped selling them yet you can still pick up one from Pan speed I believe...In anycase...there aren't many choices these days...I had a chance to speak with the guys at FEED on a few occasions and they recommended going with a HKS FCONV Pro setup for maximum tuning capability...The only problem is it's REALLY EXPENSIVE since only "pro" shops can install it and FEED is definitely a "pro" shop.

We'll see when I cross that bridge...;) For now...I'm more than happy with power output and delivery...in fact, I see the stock brakes becoming more of an issue than anything at this point!

There are companies that sell them in the states:
http://www.melting-pot.com/website/products.html

Only problem is the FM band doesn't quite match up to ours. I believe theres is smaller.

That site you posted hasn't been updated in a couple years it seems...Plus if you get a hold of a "JDM" navi unit...you'll have to deal with everything being in Japanese/Kanji/Hiragana/Katakana...lol...Trust me...Stick with your native tongue ;)

just OMG O.O....
That's a REAL CAR!

(mswerd)

Update coming soon...The next stage of upgrades has begun! :D

Dropped off the car as planned last week (3/3) and I'll be dropping by for the next meeting on the 17th!

Time to update the mod schedule...

Current
The Cosmo is at the dealer having the Navi unit custom mounted...

March 9th - March 17th
* Navi unit being custom mounted
* RE Amemiya steering column gauge pod on order
* New scuff plates to be installed
* Preventative maintenance checks
-- Spark Plugs
-- Differential oil

March 17th~
* Navi system & custom mount/plate initial status check
* RE Amemiya steering column gauge pod arrived???
* Order the following Defi goodies
-- Defi's new "Racer Gauge" for Boost (not the best name imo but it comes in size 52 which I need for the pod as 60 may be too large)
-- Defi-Link Display
-- Defi-Link Control Unit II

Meeting the Pro Audio guy went well...He seems like a very experienced installer who understands the look & feel I'm going for...He even had a few good ideas for both the Navi setup and the upcoming Defi / glovebox idea. (2thumbs)

I'm excited to see his progress on the 17th...Can't wait to get my ride back!!! :D

Simply just beautiful Antoine! I just love rotary power! Heres to hoping that Mazda will bring that rx-7 back soon!

Just curious, as you know here (usa) no one likes the dealers since they tend to do a shabby job, how are the dealers there , better then a local performance shop ??

P.S you don't have autometer gauges there lol

Thanks for props guys...The 17th is coming up soon and I'm really looking forward to see how things are progressing with the navi setup and of course...I miss my ride!!!

As for the Dealer question...I would never trust a Dealer back in the states to work on a ride like this...I guess I'm just lucky that I live near a really cool dealer that happens to be very rotary friendly. :D

Most Dealers in Japan are quite small and I don't think they deal much in aftermarket parts & service...The one near me happens to specialize in "sport" Mazdas and related aftermarket goodies...Which means whether you're ordering a new Mazda or looking to upgrade your current one...They can offer & install performance goodies from all the best names in the business!

The staff guy I've been dealing with has been awesome...He's a real car guy and a big fan of the Cosmo. It's pretty freaking amazing that I can actually find a mechanic that knows and has worked on multiple Eunos Cosmos over the years...just a 5 min walk from my place!!!

A lot of what he is doing seems to be more like favors and special orders than standard customer/staff protocol...but over the past few months...We've become friends and I always look forward to working with him on upgrading my ride. :D

As for the "autometer gauges"...I'm sure you can get them in Japan but the "local" offerings from companies like Defi are some of the best IMO and in my case...Defi's offering matches the look & feel I'm going for...;)

That said...Autometer gauges do look good in American iron and sport compacts...

GD...I envy you right now!!!
But I have the ability to put in for an assignment there...so not really...lol.
Subbed for pics and updates!!!

UPdate! :D

Just got back from checking out the progress on the navi install...It's basically done except for a few details...Checkout these pics :)

@ the Mazda Dealer...I wish I had garage like this...I love how the Cosmo looks in such a setting (thumb)

Interior view of the new navi install/setup...I told the pro-audio guy to keep the factory look and try to blend the new navi with the original climate control unit...I think he did a fine job indeed...The climate control was relocated below the navi and I love how it looks like it's floating...Overall...Came out very clean and simple...I'm very satisfied with his work!
