Hi everybody, Im new here and Im looking at buying a Protege5. I think that they are one of the best cars out there! What problems have you had with your cars? Sorry if this is posted else where, if it is could you please let me know?

bought my 02 new in july of 01...only prob i had was with the EGR valve, replaced under warrenty at 35K, i have 85K on ther car, it's been boosted the last 8K, car runs and looks like day one! you can't go wrong...unless the previous owner beat on it or didn't do the regular maint. i have many, many cars over the yrs, this is by far one of the best and most fun to drive...i can't see not ever having this car...of course the day will come....

so far no probs mechanically for me. you will find that some have problems with the egr clogging. there really aren't many problems. the only major issue had a recall on it and that was for the butteryfly screws.

yeah my car has been in the family since '03 when we bought it new, it has gone on many ski trips and has 62k on it. No complaints here, I love it!

I'm just about to turn 32K on my 2003 P5. Besides the recall item, I've had nothing major and it runs beautifully! While cruising, there's not a single rattle or squeak! Surprising to me because I only bought her for $14,500 new!

You can't go wrong with a P5!

zero problems in 2.5 years. My 2000 GMC Sonoma was at the dealer 33 times in a year and a half for warranty defects. I would say this was a good move. We got a B3000 at the same time. Had 1 warranty issue. a defective hose clamp on a radiator hose. So even though it is a Ford, it has been stellar as well.

There was one recall on our cars, some 2003 models had vcts screwws coming loose. They replace the intake manifold no charge, and problem solved.

There is issues with the EGR needing to be cleaned, but that is pretty easy. The how-to section has instructions for that, the brakes, etc.

You cannot go wrong with a p5. just run a carfax to make sure it is not a flood/wreck/total/etc car.

The only problem you'll probably encounter is that you end up loving your car too much and friends and family will get jealous. :)

Here are some issues I remember over the years...

1. Some 2003 models had vcts screws issue - recall done.
2. Erratic idle or stalling at a stop - I believe is EGR related.
3. Interior rattles.
4. Rotor hubs rust badly.
5. Stock horsepower not enough (debatable, but this is an enthusiast's forum).
6. Some 2002 models had/have cold clutch chatter.

I can't think of any more off the top of my head. Feel free to add to this list and maybe we could make this a sticky (since this gets asked quite frequently). I haven't had to replace anything other than normal wear items/fluids since I purchased mine two years ago.

no major problems got the car with 70k, rolled 88k this past week. had the car for a year and 1/2. The only problem I have right now is that I couldn't re-use the exhaust "donut" gasket while putting in headers, so I'm stuck until I can get a new one.

my car has 58k with only 10k on the engine,( i blew the other somehow) but besides some rattles and the rusting of the rotors this car is a blast! oh yeah recharge your AC every 2 years and ur all set! don't be hesitant JOIN US MAZDA ADDICTS!

65.5k miles and it has never let me down. I've replaced a lot of stuff on her, but never because anything was broken. General maintenance work like oil changes, air filter, and spark plugs... very easy to do on this car compared to the truck I had prior.

The only problem I have with my P5 on a daily basis is that I love it so much that I don't think I can ever let it go! It is such a BLAST to drive it, even if it doesn't have the HP to beat everyone on the road who the hell cares. The car looks awesome, drives so nicely, handles like a dream... mmm

I really need to go drive my car now, I haven't yet today!

GO THEN GO!(ughdance) (ughdance) (ughdance) (ughdance)

Not enough power @ 30K (bought @ ~30K)
ECU has been reprogrammed, not sure what, for there is a sticker on the door.
30,200 miles needed front pads...

Fixed the power thing 2nd week (added a little T3)

Left front wheel bearing @ 55K miles, IIRC there may be a TSB on it but for $40.00 I just changed it myself...

Still waiting to find screws in the cat, but haven't yet...

Thanks everybody for the quick responses! I have always liked this car as i said since it came out so now all i'm doing is some research on it and saving to be able to buy the car outright, b/c insurance is rediculous for a young guy on a reletively new car. For those of you who don't know me i'm a pretty hardcore dodge/chrysler/jeep fan but when i found out that a P5 would be cheaper on insurance and probably more reliable than an older neon i said SWEET! just the excuse i wanted to get this car. Keep the comments coming, i just finished reading the potential scammer thread and it seems like this is an aewsome community! Hopefully i will have a nice one soon!
P.S. does the P5 have those chipped keys? the ones that only the dealers sell for 75-100 dollars? Thnks again!

Insurence on this car is cheap compared to my other car! I was paying 178 a month for liability insurence on a 94 grand am (cheapest rate I could find - Mr Auto) and on my MP5 I pay 166 full coverage! I'm 22 and dont have a thing on me!

I have a few issue with the sunroof rattles when open... I tink its just the brackets for the sliding door thing for a lack of what better to call it.

I also have abelt chirping issue when the car shift some times (ATX with 137-138K on it).

But no real issues in the 8k miles of me owning the car in the past 4 months. I did however have abelt break but thats because it was old more then likely.
