Where's a good place to track down part numbers? I need to order some more bolts of the style that connect the block and trans. All I'm getting from the FSM is torque specs, unless I'm looking in the wrong section.

Here's a page from the FSM that appears to have part numbers, but none of them turned up results on onlinemazdaparts.com....

They are a 17mm head, M12 (i think) (not sure on the pitch..) Flange bolt...which is not that fun to try and track down..They are a JIS bolt I believe..

Finally figured out what bolts are used to hole the trans onto the block. Ace hardware didn't have what I needed, although they have a decent metric selection. Even google turns up nothing for the correct size, besides Titanium "racing" bolts that are priced at a whopping 22.50 each.

The correct size is M12 x 1.25 x 80 partially threaded, and it's a flange bolt. Apparently nothing is made in that size, so I got a regular hex bolt. A flange bolt has a sort of built in washer in the head, like so:

I would have just gotten longer threaded bolts, washers, and cut the bolts shorter if they really needed to be.

They'll be fine for mounting the engine on the stand, but I think I'm gonna go to a junkyard and pull some for actually mounting the trans. I can't even find a website that sells JIS M12 bolts. The thing is, they're 17mm instead of the 'standard metric' 19mm head for an M12. I'm not sure, but there may be clearance problems getting a 19mm socket in there, or perhaps Mazda just did it to keep things uniform.

I want to get a 20lb CO2 bottle like the off road guys carry for junk yard duty. When full, it's supposed to be able to run an impact gun flat out for 10 mins or something crazy like that. That sure would make things easier [or possible] with all of the NE Ohio rust...

I'm going to fill out and submit my Mazdaspeed form shortly here too so you can at least get the part number for the OEM bolts then order them through the dealership or OnlineMazdaParts.com.

The flange is to get the same effective surface area as a larger headed bolt.

Cool, that would be very helpful. The schematic I got at the dealership isn't very insightful.

JK, off hand, do you know if all of the bolts that secure the trans to the block are the same length? Mine came with three 80mm ones and one 65mm in the block holes where the trans would mount.

True, I thought about that too, but forgot it by the time I was typing. :D

Oooo

Hmm, intermediate housing got smashed a bit, probably from transporting the motor and setting it on things. I should be able to bend it back with a pair of pliers, or maybe that ring is part of the gasket that can be replaced. I think I actually replaced that on mine when I did my axle, now that I think about it. Are the 3 bolts the common or uncommon ones?

IIRC, the 3 bolts are the very uncommon ones. Keep that and cherish it. Haha. And you should be able to bend that flange back. That's the flange that Peaches whacked with the BFH on mine. Looks purty!

Do you have a estimated time for the swap?

Yup...that little lip around the bearing can be pulled away..

The 3 bolt flanges used to be cherished more than they are now, because people finally realized that you can drill a two bolt and they work just the same, lol.

That engine is CLEAN looking! I'm jelly..

I'll have a better idea when the swap will go down after I get my truck back. I want to do the brake lines on it, and replace the speed sensor and probably get a new battery to get it into solid DD shape before the swap happens.

Thanks for the compliment and info, John.

So, as for updates, I bought Evan's old trans and clutch. No pics, as they're both in bags, but it's a JDM trans with a really short final drive, the 4.38 I'm guessing. I've already considered swapping the 5th gear from the FS trans to get the revs a bit lower on the highway.

The clutch is a Clutchmasters Stage 1R from RR Racing from what I understand. It only has maybe 1-2k miles on it, as Evan just ran it for a few months last year before putting that motor in his Milly.

The only major parts remaining (aside from fluids and possibly bolts, odds and ends basically) are the flywheel, radiator, and headers!

Ur motor looks perddy. Would be nice to see it on the 6th
