Power from a Matrix XRS

I had called a Toyota dealership here in KC about a Matrix XRS for a friend and I asked the salesman on the phone how the XRS made the extra 50 horse over the other two models...

The guy on the phone told me that everything is the same except that the fuel get dumped into the motor at peak power. I was like :wtf: that's it? not intake, exhaust, anything? the guy was like nope that's it.

I know that dealerships aren't the best place to get info. But can anyone verify that there is nothing else different from the other two models?

thanx in advance

i believe the engine is different...the VVT-i controller is changed too and probably different cams. i'm not sure, i remember reading something about it but can't remember. i just knoe it's the same engine from the celica gt-s. tranny carries over too

hey not ugly! i like the matrix..

Four bases:

Matrix XRS - VVTL-I 180hp *just like the celica GT-S*
Matix XR - 130hp VVT-I *Found in corollas*
Matrix (Base) - 130hp VVT-I " " "
Matrix AWD (base/XR) - 127hp VVT-I

VVTL-I - Variable Valve Timing Lift w/ Intelligence
VVT-I - Variable Valve Timing w/ Intelligence

XRS - Does not come in Autos anymore - 6 speed manual
Base/xr/awd - 4 speed auto w/ overdrive or 5 speed manual

Pic of my matrix b4 I got my Mazdaspeed:

Yo, Corolla! Ya know, in the post above mine? The one I was responding to? Not the Matrix (which isn't as ugly, but still not good)

ah kewl.. sorry bro hehe.. i thought u meant matrix..

i love da matrix..

corollas.. uh.. eh... so-so lol

yeah corollas are frumpy looking IMO...And I am not too fond of the big trucklet Matrix either...

The engine differences, like mentioned above, is mostly in the head...I believe the XRS's engine (forget the name tag, but it is in the XRS, GT-S, and Vibe GT models) has 11.1:1 compression too, which is higher than the base models...But it is still a 1.8L 4 cylinder...like the rest...also the intake and exhuast systems very in size between the different models...

why is the AWD version only found in the base model ??? that does not make sense.....
and why can't they mash a AWD to the manual tranny??
if they had XRS with AWD i think that is what i would have got.....

AWD is generally a bad idea with cars that have a (relatively) low power output as the drivetrain saps all their power

Technically, i believe the Matrix is a Corolla.

They are maybe worried about the awd tranny not supporting high output but i've seen an toyota all-trac tranny open from a celica and those guys did an awesome tranny i wouldn't be scare to put stress on those tranny.

yea.. when i got my car it said "corolla matrix" ...

A friend dyno'd his matrix xrs wid me yesterday:

HP@W: 179hp@6,200rpm
Torque lb ft: 123lbs

Mods: AEM Cold Air Intake, Greddy cat-back Exhaust

mine - 2003.5 Mazdaspeed protege:

HP@W: 146hp
Torque lb ft: 155lb

wow? WTF??? how come the matrix has so little loss in HP from the stated 180hp?

that probably means a base corolla with 130hp has more hp at the wheels than us proteges

I'm getting a matrix corolla man....

Keep in mind the mods listed for the Matrix that was run on the dyno. It still seems like very little drivetrain loss, but with the mods he was making several hp more than the stock 180.

Chris

curb weight for XRS is only 2800lbs
P5 is 2716lbs
MSP is 2843lbs

o!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
that means the Matrix XRS should killl the MSP anyday in a straight line.....

oh yea no doubt.. matrix with Lift is a tough competitor..
Would have gotte one, but My Mom co-signed and she wanted
an automatic.. :( .. but now i gotz a MS! so woohoo!!

where did you get that info? I haven't looked up on it in a long time...to my understanding the P5 was the heaviest weighing in at more than 2800lbs...and all the sedans including the MSP were under 2800lbs...But again that info is old and I could be wrong...
