possible club

and i agree shirts should wait until we actually build some sort of a following..

and along the lines with "protege" in the name.. i think we should steer away from weeding out other mazda owners...

how about Detroit Mazda Club

Southern Michigan Mazda Club..

i am completely drawing blanks when it comes to club names..

or something just simple like Michigan Mazda

ok...some random names

MECOM - Mazda Enthusiasts' Club of Michigan

MIMazda....self explanatory

MXMichigan - ya know....MX-3, MX-6....doesn't MX stand for "Mazda Experiment" or somethin like that?

a name...why must this be so difficult?

hmm..

motor city mazda...MI mazda crew....we could always go for an alliteration..MI Mazda Mafia...jk jk....mazdas of MI...mazda crew/club/assoc/ etc. of MI...i dont know, im done thinking for now...im not very creative

yea the shirt thing was just something i thought about while i was working when u drive for a living u get some time to think i jsut an idea and we shouldnt do anything with shirts until a name and decent amount of members is established

Yeah! *ahem*

I like Michigan Zoom Zoom Owners. The acronym (MIZZO) makes a nice sound (if a little Snoop Doggy-ish) and is easy to say. (dunno)

The other group I'm in, GWRRA, is a pain the tongue to try to say. Ends up coming out grr-rrr-rra. (silly)

Also, depending on how big we get and other factors, Mazda may not allow us use of the name.

Kev, I'm a member of Force Fed Detroit. We're a small crew. My webpage is hosted off of it, and links to the club. I think a state wide name would be best suited. As far as shirts go, cafe press.com or whatever it is, is usually pretty cheap. I have a buddy in Wisconsin that could probably do it as well. Really, you guys should set the club up, and get it organized before you worry about goodies and stuff like that.

well, my brother owns a sign shopo, specializing in vynle. once we get a aname we can have any one good with a computer make some logos and take a vote on it.... i can send it to him and we can make em.
how about the GOBLINS... lol jk I cant think of any. im not good at this... i mean come on look at my screen name.

Why not change it to "Pozt Whizzore"?:D

How about PLUM, Protege's of Lower and Upper Michigan:D

Ok, this is a sad sign of me needing sleep, so off I go.

Okay, I have some interesting/good news for everyone, well, at least thats what I see it as. Anyway, here goes:

First off, I work for a company at my University, and design/run/maintain two websites for our division. They're pretty simple and bland, but that's the way they wanted them. Anyway, I would like to volunteer to design a website that would be easily maintainable by more than one person. We'd set up a news script that would allow users to login and post news, and the page itself would automatically update based on posted news. That wouldn't be too hard to setup. For an idea of some of the stuff I've worked on, I've done simple stuff, to more involved designs, although the second of the two I'm about to show don't show my limitations.

work site: http://universitystores.msu.edu/

cs team site: http://www.msu.edu/~aikenben/frag/

The first one is obviously for work, while the second is for a Counter-Strike team I play on. Anyway, both are pretty basic, but gives a small idea of some of the possibilities.

Secondly, and possibly just as important, my mom has a local cable TV show. Now I'm sure you're all wondering where this is going. Well, she wants me to be a guest on her show, interview me. I used to own a Pontiac Grand Am (yeah, wtf was I thinking? I'll never know), but had major problems with it, and ultimately traded it in for my beautiful MSP, and at a loss too. Anyway, she wants to interview me, talk about the process of switching cars, and ultimately get to the topic of my love for the car, and the things I've learned from owning it, and the people that I've met, which in turn leads to the club we're starting. Now I know it's not much, but she wants to show pics of the website, of some of the cars (from our previous meet), and talk about some of our events, as well as talk about future ones. I know it's not much, and it is just local cable, but exposure is exposure. It might enlighten some people--let them know that these car clubs aren't about racing and raging horomones. It's about sharing a common love/interest, just like people who go golfing, or people who spend a day out on the boat sailing or something (kinda distant relation but oh well).

Anyway, that's it for now... let me know what you all think, and if you think it would be good exposure. I'm all ears, and btw, I'm sure she'd be willing to have more than one guest if anyone else wanted to join the set for 15 minutes of fame. Please give me FEEDBACK!!! (attn)

I want to expand on this idea some more... I was talkign w/ my mom this morning. She has some friends who work for the Detroit Free Press. You might have read their column--"He said She said"--a column about cars and whatnot. Anyway, she was talking about possibly even talking to them, and getting some newspaper coverage as well, something to kind of explain us, and our intentions and whatnot.

Anyway, PLEASE GIVE ME FEEDBACK. If you think this is good exposure, tell me. If you think this is just too overboard, tell me. Either way, I NEED TO KNOW!!! :)

Because not all of us have Proteges!!

It was a joke. I would laugh at a club called that. Plums are for old people that like oatmeal;)

There's another lady that is happy to write about the car scene for the free press as well. I really think you guys should focus about the club, not advertising for now. Focus on key preferences, reasons for the club, and club activities. If it's well organized, everything else will follow. Look at xceedspeed (it's really a message board), they're going to be hosting a sanctioned sport compact series with cash/prize payouts. Focus on the core values, and go from there. Don't worry about getting noticed, having a flashy banner, or whatever else. It's the people that make the club, all the other stuff is nice, but it's the events that make people want to join.

I know Anita too! I served on her youth automotive panel last year. Good stuff.

I agree that we need to have a club before we can advertise for it. Once we're up and running, the Detroit News has a spot where they feature two or three car clubs every week. It's just a paragrpah, but it tells people what they do and where they meet and how to join.....but this is all work for the future.

I made a lil' chart for making names:

THE TOKEN "MAZDA" ADJECTIVE
Mazda
Zoom Zoom
SUBJECT (optional)
Owners
Enthusiasts
ORGANIZATION
Club
Association
Organization
Group
Team
PLACE (optional)
Michigan
Great Lakes (Area)
The Mitten

MiMO - Michigan Mazda Owners (or organization) pronounced "me mo'"
MiMEC - Michigan Mazda Enthusiasts' Club pronounced "mimick"
GLOOM - Great Lakes Owners Of Mazdas <------This really sucks, I hope no one likes it.

Aiken you mentioned a website, we already have two that we have access to. The one that PdHaudio runs and this one. I do like the fact that several of you have ways to get good exposure once we are ready to launch this thing. And we are all thinking, that is good. IMHO, I think that we need to focus on the core issues. Please see below:

1. Decide who will be the leadership. Election if necessary. This can be done at our next group meet. Without good leadership the group will die. Some have already stepped forward to volunteer for positions.

2. Pick a regular weekly/monthly/bi-monthly meet or place to "hang". A good example is the Subaru club. They meet every tuesday night at BW3's in Novi. I have been hanging out with them the last couple of weeks to see what goes on. They have even 10-15 cars on a slow night. They have guys driving from the east side to come out to this weekly meet. It is a regular deal so there are always folks in attendence. They welcome other makes as well.

3. Create an identity through club name, events and members. We already have enough people that have shown interest, now we need to get together as a group and figure some of this stuff out. Then put together an "in-stone" calendar of events and have volunteers help plan these events. As someone said the events are key and I agree.

4. Depending on how far this goes, we then start adding "filler" types of things such as club t-shirts, hats, member cards, webpages, newsletters, advertising, etc. As we gain size and exposure, we can attract businesses to advertise with us and for us.

Just as an example, I have spent the last 4 years building from the ground up my Ducati Owners club Ducs Unlimited here in Michigan. Take a look at our site http://www.ducsunlimited.com. We have finally gotten to a point, where with the hard work of my fellow executive board members, we just recently became incorporated with the IRS and State of Michigan as a Non-Profit Corporation. We have a quarterly newsletter that we have dealers and retailers advertising in and we have sponsors advertising on our website. We have about 60 members from all over Michigan some from Ohio. We charge dues to all of our members and currently have a treasury of about $1500.00. Our goal is to eventually be able to host trackdays and large events at regional level. All of these things took alot of time and commitment from the leadership to make happen. The first two years I didn't get alot of help and it was a real struggle. It seems like we have a bunch of people in this group with great ideas and the energy it takes to make this kind of thing happen. Plus we have the fact that there are a hell of alot more owners of Mazda's out there than Ducati's. :D

I kind of like MIZZO (Michigan Zoom Zoom Owners) myself, oh thats right I thought of it. (upyours)

Anyway, I am looking forward to working with you guys to make this happen. We just have to take it one step at a time and make the right choices. ;)
