so are you saying that we should live in a society thats constantly bombarded with smut?

i personally dont like some of the programs on tv that they're coming out with. thats why we have vchips and parental guidence ratings on programs now, just like the movie theatres. its still not good that these programs are airing but atleast we have a filter for em.

magazines have always been a problem too, but we can control wich magazines to purchase and wich not to. they dont have porn/smut in a car and driver magazine, motortrend, or a hobby magazine of some sort... so why should we have it here, this is a hobby right?

we're constantly on guard trying to protect our youth from unwanted profanity and trying to filter out all the dirty images so we can bring up a developed individual with good morals and wits about him. its becoming even more difficult if nearly impossible to do so, with people not caring or showing respect to eachother. Now its commonplace to see children/teenagers not caring about themselves or eachother and participating in and or antagonizing events such as doing drugs/sex to happen that they would not normally do if they were raised and brought up in a good society. i see a lot of lil kids/teenagers treating women as if they were objects; they dont even treat em like fellow persons. its sad.

all this smut gives an attitude that we dont care, and its wrong. we shouldnt pass this attitude onto our children, but we do anyways, and this is why its hard to dicipline and correct a bad behavior when our children learned it from us to begin with.

we need to set a better example and change our attitudes about this, or society will continually spiral downwards with the generations after us.

Sorry, but you'll be disappointed because we will only see an increase in the amount of porn being passed around. The porn industry is a $10 BILLION a year business and it's really impossible to stop it from it's exponential growth unless some law is passed to ban it or censorship is imposed. When that much money and freedom is involved, it's not that easy to control.

Think about smoking. We COULD ban smoking and that would drastically cut down the cases of lung diseases and cancer. But why doesn't the government ban it? Besides the protecting the "freedom" of people wanting to smoke, imagine the amount of revenue lost from taxes?

So we can only educate our children of what is right and wrong and they will have to find their way. You can protect them up to a certain extent, but you can never be around them 24/7/365.

Don't get me wrong, i'm not saying porn should be freely distributed all over society, but sometimes you have to look at where the world is going and accept the fact that somethings cannot be changed (or will be very difficult to).

I can agree with all of the first post, although as long as you don't click on any threads that say nws or ww or whatever it is that is used around here, there shouldn't be a problem with it.

All very good posts for both sides. Although I am allowing myself to possibly be flamed for this, please understand it is not a shot at anyone or their beliefs:
Don't want your boss or co-workers to be offended by cyber-titties, etc.? Concentrate on working instead.
Don't want your children to be wrongly influenced or spouse offended? Go play catch or help out around the house, dammit. Spend some time with the family instead of browsing car sites.
It really is up to the individual to decide how to handle this "epidemic" since the choices are there. I do understand how annoying it can be to have to scroll through some of the sigs, but since they only appear on your first post on a given page, it isn't that big a deal anymore. Avatars? They're smaller than a postage stamp, for the love of Satan! If I actually paid attention to all of them, my damn eyes would fall out!
Anywho, this will be an ongoing battle, until the mods/admins decide censorship is best. Then we'll all b**** about that.

I tend to agree with the original post. While I could choose to close avatars and sigs, I don't want to (my right) just to not have to deal with a rump-shaker or a self breast exam.

I would like to point out to the people suggesting that we "concentrate on work" while on the job... some of us eat lunch at our desks on our lunch hour. Yes my company is not paying me to surf the net, but they do have a somewhat lenient policy about what's considered acceptable use of their resources for personal use/benefit. Some of the visual material on this website (that isn't explicitly labelled NSFW) would still not be considered work-safe.

Most of that goes back to what another person might consider indecent.
Think of it this way... you might not mind telling an off-color joke, but if someone within earshot hears it and is offended, that's grounds for discipline in the workplace (at least my workplace). You may not have had a problem with it, but someone else did and you made them feel uncomfortable.

I'm not suggesting censorship, but agree that enlightenment and freedom to speak out is our right. I'm glad that this thread has remained civil.

I think you may be missing my point. One of the freedoms that we enjoy as a society is the freedom of speech. We also have the freedom to not listen or watch. I feel that this core freedom is one of the things that makes our society great. I am a bit concerned about your comment about the programs airing at all that you said below, it would seem that you are actually voting for censorship? Anyway, moving on here, the actual problem is not with the pictures or movies, but in the social taboo's surrounding sexuality in this country- We are taught on one hand that it is bad, it is evil, and you are going to hell if you have sex before marriage, but on the other hand it is happening all around us. This comes down to freedoms. If you can talk to your children to explain your point of view and make it a non-issue instead of trying to protect them from the world, imho, then you will wind up with much more well adjusted adults. If you are afraid to even broach the subject, curiosity will get the better of them.... So on to the point after the long post, it is the parent's responsibility to bring up their children and to teach them that women aren't just objects of lust or pieces of meat, to say society has failed them is a cop out. Teach them that women are incredible and mysterious- lead by example- but don't infringe on the rights of others while doing so

the skimpy clad female and car thing has been around for years. it's all, about selling the "product" i couldn't believe what i saw @ hot import nights. these girls couldn't have been of legal age. i actually felt for the girls that were on stage, (i didn't hang around to watch) but hey, that's their right to do what they want to earn a buck.

I agree with this. Do not rely on others for your protection, and don't ruin things for the majority of people that have no problems with it. Disable your sigs, disable your avatars while in places you shouldn't see them, and enable them when its safe. Its no different than the TV analogy.

That said, I still wish we'd enforce some kind of signature limit. I've had mine off for 2 years now because people like to put a ******* entire page of worthless s*** on them that makes reading a thread = scroll mania. Over at ClubSi, its 150 pixels or something like that.

We've had threads just like this one a while ago and I thought it was already decided to "be nice" and just keep smut off our sigs/avatars. I know I removed things from my sig to help out. It really doesn't take much to just not do it, makes life much simpler for folk browsing at work, and if you think about it it adds nothing if you do add it.

If you don't want to scroll through people's sigs (and only a few people complain about sig size), then just disable sigs and you're all set.

There have been a lot of comments contributed to this thread, and I'm sure there are many of us that appreciate the responsible, respectful nature of most of them.

To answer a few points that have come up:

1) I have no interest in censorship. If you want to say it or show it, by all means do so. I do not want to infringe on anybody's rights to express themselves in total and complete freedom.

2) My ideas do not revolve around my morals or beliefs, but on the assumption that there is a proper time and place for everything. Sex is a vital part of life, but in my opinion, it just isn't appropriate everywhere. I have sex often, but I don't have sex when I go to car shows. Why must the two be inseparable? Perhaps I have grown out of what many of you are categorizing as 'requisites of the import scene.'

3) You're right, azian6er. It may be time to sell the Protege5 and leave this forum in search of a more balanced group.

Don't want smut with cars? Read "Car and Driver" or "Road and Track". Otherwise, forget it. It's in almost every publication, every auto tv show, ads, etc. Face it, sex sells. Granted, putting in sigs and avatars is not selling, but it is what it is.

I have already stated my views on this thread last night, but since this seems to be such an important topic for a bunch of members (why this is I cant imagine), then I think there is only one way to solve this once and for all - a poll. Have the admins set up a poll where you have two choices:

1) Pics of women/sex need to be permanently banned from the sigs and avatars - no exceptions.

2) Leave s*** alone. Why mess with a good thing? I like ta tas.

Have this poll set so that members (and only members) can only vote one time, leave the poll up for a month or so, and whichever selection has the majority at the end of the month wins (and no more bringing the crap up).

I think everyone who has read this thread knows which way I will be voting (2), but since I apparently dont speak for the majority here, then this is the only fair way to solve this.

what I dont understand is why people keep talking about how "sex sells" and "the porn industry makes a lot of money" so we cant get away from it. Why should the majority of posters on this forum be using sex or porn to sell anything? We aren't selling things, we are reading about topics on our cars. The only people who should have this concern are the AVs and people who pay for advertisements, not the people who are posting. Like Zmzmzm is saying, there really isnt any reason for it in your sig. Its like, the members who put the animated gifs, and pictures of half naked women in their sigs are the ones who chose when other members are allowed to fully enjoy this site. I dont think its right. Like Dexter was saying, why do we need to know about your sexuality preferences? You can have that littered across your desktop if you want to, but on this site what do you gain from it? (dunno) This is just how I see it. It isnt about infringing on other peoples rights. It truly is about a right time and place for everything.
