Pics of Double Din Mazda5 Avic-D3 Install

Well, i'm at it again... asking stupid questions...

When you pulled out the stock radio was there a 14-pin, 24-pin or just plain ISO connectors? Just recieved the SWI-PS today, and picked up the 5 last thursday. The pioneer navigation is on its way and the shop that does the install asked if i knew about the connectors...

Hope you can find the time to help me here...

Mine was a 24-pin, and I installed it based on PAC's online instructions and programmed it, but I still can't get it to work with my steering wheel radio buttons. So if you can get it to work, please let us know what you did.

mazdadude : I just pm'd you but thought that maybe others who are interested in the D-3 may have similar questions.

Hi, I was planning to buy the Pioneer Avic-D3 for my Mazda 5 and was wondering if you can answer a few questions.

1. Is the GPS unit similar to the Magellan type where without the DVD's, the navigation screen will still show your current location and the surrounding streets ? I understand that the DVD's are used for programming a start to finish route with voice instructions but I am wondering for the day to day drive, will it show the current location and surrounding streets as you are driving.

2. Did you get your steering wheel control module yet ? I bought a PAC but was wondering if it will work since someone else on the forum said they couldn't get theirs to work.

3. If you use the Nav DVD's with a programmed route in effect with the voice navigation on, does the navigation voice come from the unit itself or through the car stereo ? I am wondering if it over-rides the music from the headunit.

4. Does the D-3 have the capability of dual monitor capability ? I was hoping to install a second monitor : 1 for GPS Navigation and 1 for the Ipod and DVD Video. I was wondering if dual monitor with dual functions can simultaneously be on.

Thanks.

I am not familiar with the Magellan, however, the Avic-d3 loads your current area into the memory, but if you travel outside of the area loaded into the mem, you will not have detail on the maps, and the nav will zoom out.

2. Did you get your steering wheel control module yet ? I bought a PAC but was wondering if it will work since someone else on the forum said they couldn't get theirs to work.

I have not installed the module yet, my wife never wants to give up the car(boobs)

The voice nav comes thru the speakers, it will mute your current audio, announce the nav, and then unmute the audio.

I have seen conflicting information on this, and I am not 100% certain, however the way I understand is that you have an additional video out, but it is not a true dual-zone video

A great forum for those who are interested in the Pioneer Avic's

The brackets came with the new dash console install kit.

is that thespeedline.com guys from Taiwan still alive?
i've contacted them once because the shopping cart on their web doesn't work for me.
they emailed me back saying that they will take email orders since shopping cart doesn't work on some systems....
anyhow, so i emailed them about 2DIN dash kit like yours and folding electronic mirrors.
but nothing from them about 2 weeks now....

Got the D3 in today - well almost anyway, need to finish the brackets for the unit, since i bought the original mazda double din panel, i have to make some myself. Haven't had time to play with the PAC unit yet...

How are you planning to modify your double-din panel to work with the D3 ? Do you have any pics available ? I got my D3 but didn't get the dash kit yet. The people at thespeedline.com are not responding to me either. Mazda Canada can't order it in for me. I emailed Mazda HK, Taiwan and Japan but have not heard back from them yet either.

There are some installers at www.avic411.com but they don't have any suggestions for me either.

Why buy that Pioneer head unit when you can have a full-blown pc in there? Sure, Vista sucks but I bet the manufacturer could install XP or maybe Ubuntu if you wanted. Anyway, here's their head unit and I think it retails for about $1900 USD.

I thought about the carpc things, as I am a PC junkie, but I just couldn't stomach spending over $1000 more than my Pioneer D3 was.

I had thought about the Pioneer Z1/Z2, but again, I couldn't see spending $1500 or more for a stereo. I have had many systems before, my last big stealthy system (~$4k) was stolen when my car was stolen. I am not going that route again.

That is why I decide to stay in the 800-900 range.

I paid $880 for the D3, and $160 for the double din dash and harness, so $1040 out the door.

Good price! After searching and finally (3 months) coming across your post, I was able to buy the same doubledin dash kit and proceed with the rest of purchase and install. I also bought the AVIC-D3, but cost me $1150 (Canadian). On top of that, I added (to my 2006 Mazda 5 GT), a 2GB IPOD, with IPOD cable, A separate DVD player with TV tuner (also in the glovebox), a steering wheel control cable ($170 inc install), 2 rear leather headrests with 7" LCD screens, and a rear camera. At first, the nav didn't seam to want to work properly. Pro installer said I needed the $60 speed cable because Mazdas don't have a VSS? They couldn't attach the cable (now I know the Pioneer pink wire can be connected directly to the speedo cluster, thanks), so I ended up calling Pioneer HO directly. They told me to reset the nav settings, which I did. It now went from 3D hybrid to simple hybrid, and everything seems to work fine, including the vehicle dynamics. I would still like to bring it back and have the pink wire attached properly though. I picked up a CMOS camera (with correct rear view on screen - not reversed, on EBAY for about $70, and mounted it on the inside of the glass. This way I don't have to get out and clean it in the winter. The IPOD, radio, DVD all work beautifully from the steering wheel controls. I also have a dual 12" sub box with Rockford Fosgate amp connected to the sub out of the Pioneer. Unbelievable sound! Finally, I had a security system with remote paging started professionally installed. Getting really high tech now! 2nd day I bought the car, I removed the air filter and replaced it with a K&N filter. About 6 months ago, I replaced the headlights with HID's, including ballasts - only $160. I'll be mounting a set of 18" Black Sportmax rims with Hankook UHP tires in the next couple of weeks. I'll post pictures of the system and car then.

Thanks again for all your help, much appreciated!!

Mazda 5 AV System

Ok, here are the picts of the system I put in. All was pro-installed. The security system has dual shock, microwave, and tilt sensors, as well as doors/hood switches. Left original alarm intact, so both systems work together. Also included is a half mile, 2-way paging car starter which works very well. I was a little reluctant to modify factory wiring, but after carefully locating a reputable dealer, as recommended by Pioneer Head Office, and after about 30 hours of labour, I had everything installed - Pioneer AVIC-D3, with steering wheel control module, bluetooth unit, IPOD interface, and keyless entry module to start the car by remote without a key. Had a separate DVD player with TV tuner installed in the glovebox, with remote sensor so it can be controlled from the back seats. Both headrests were replaced with leather headrests with 7" Hitachi hi-res screens. DVD player also feeds video to the Pioneer unit as an option. Sound is thru headphones or thru car speaker system. Kids can watch movie in the back while another movie can be played thru the Pioneer unit. Full IPOD controls on screen, or thru steering wheel controls. When phone calls come in, name and number is displayed on screen with option of accepting or rejecting call, with audio automatically muted. Managed to transfer my contacts to the Pioneer from my cell as well. Notice aluminum door sills (stick on) which emit a very bright blue LED light (Mazda) when doors are open. Very cool in the dark! In case anyone is wondering on total costs, including labour, came out to around$4500 Can, including the dash kit, subs with amp, security/starter, and camera in the back. One of the collest things about the Pioneer unit (apart from its low price) is the vehicle dynamics which can show acceleration G's, braking G's, side acceleration, slope, angular velocity, voltage, compass, and others! Will have picts of the wheels next week. Oh, also included a pict of the Xenon headlights I installed last winter, complete with 23kV ballasts...big difference when driving at night! I had to resize the images to get them all to fit, so not the highest resolution.

Everyone, here is a pic of the Mazda --> ISO connector i used:
connector.jpg

The blue wire on the left is connected to the white wire of the SWI-PS, and the right blue wire is connected to ground.

Thanks mazdadude for this original post, pictures and replies to my PM's. I never knew the D3 existed and don't know much about car stereos but had to have one after seeing your post. Thanks Vinnyfast for your pix and replies to my questions. After a few months of saving up and ordering the double-din dash kit, I have completed my install. I got my double-din dash from a member of another forum group for $130 US (sent from Taiwan). Bought the D3 from Compuplus for $880 Cdn (all inclusive of taxes, shipping). Got the steering wheel control interface SWI-PS for $51 US (all inclusive of taxes, shipping) from Ebay. Got the CD-I200 Ipod interface cable from FutureShop for $39.99 before tax. Install for all the above components cost $300 Cdn.

I did not get the VSS hooked up but everything appears to be working fine in terms of accuracy. I noticed only 2 times in the last few weeks that the nav was off by 100-200 meters but either after making a turn or a few minutes, it would auto re-calibrate while driving and everything was fine again. My illumination also is not responding. Lastly, I did not research the SWI-PS steering enough before-hand to realize that it can be programmed in multiple ways. It was left at the default which results in the up/down buttons on my steering wheel to scan when in radio mode. If programmed correctly, it should skip to the next or previous preset station.

Satellite antenna is hooked up by front windshield by driver side, see pix.

With the sub and amp installed, the sound quality while watching movies is great.

Sorry, if the pix are a bit dark.
