Yeah the plate stays with the car. They just issue a new one to you and you toss the old.

Speaking of personalized plates. I had: 55PLUS on my 70 Dodge Charger and on my 86 IROC. I worked in pestcontrol during highschool. The plate on my truck said BUGBOY. I just cancelled CRSHN (crashin) on my Kawasaki Ninja.

Then my 66 Mustang currently says SWET66. I can't afford a personalized plate for the Pro. I pay too much for registration now.

Too many vehicles in the garages. (2 cars, 2 motorcycles, 1 truck and a travel "hunting" trailer.)
