Painting Pillars??

So I have been throwing the idea around about doing some work on the pillars on my Speed3. It will give me something to do on the car.. without spending a crap load on parts since Im trying to pay off a couple things. My ??? is since the car has side impact air bags, would taking the A pillars off cause problems with those? Might be a stupid ??? but I thought Id ask anyways. If anyone knows, please let me know. Thanks in advance.

the air bags are not in the pillars, the logo is just on there because they have no where else to put it.

the top portion of the pillar pops out to let part of the airbag out from the roof.. if you paint them or recover in fabric, that is not going to affect anything with the airbag system.

just be careful taking them on and off and don't force anything and you will be just fine.

have fun an take pics when your done.

I am still trying to figure out what i wanna do, paint or recover in fabric...

yeah fabric is looking like a good alternative to me... if I did paint mine I would want them to be smooth and thats just way to much sanding and wet sanding for me. So I might just do them in a suede like material.

or just pay the money for a bodyshop to do it.... i know the feeling.. i had a fiberglass headliner in my last car, lots and lots of sanding.. will never do that again..... but it looked good

i think I can actually buy the fabric and do it myself. I've done fabric before so it shouldn't be too hard.

might be hard to see as it would be reflective right by your eyes while ya drive...wouldnt take much to do sand it down prime it then wet sand it...might look better with a mat finish (dull)

yeah Idk... Ive seen a the pillars in a smooth shiny red before and it looked really really good. But I dont know if I could take another 2-3 hours of pure sanding and wet sanding again!!! The fabric idea would actually be really easy, just spray some adhesive on there, lay the fabric down and then just smooth everything out so theres no winkles or anything.

I had bright orange pillars in my last car and they never once bothered me with the sun.... not sure how the speed would work out that way. speaking of which i had a fiberglass headliner too, talk about hours of sanding.

fabric is definitely much easier and less expensive.

some body shops probably wouldnt take a job like the pillars, but some will. since it requires bondo etc to get it smooth alot just don't wanna deal with it or they are going to charge you an arm and a leg.

some of my pillar stuff from the old car:

headliner paint job sucked since it was done quick because i had a show so its not the best looking thing in that shot.

wow thats crazy!!! meaning good and awesome haha. Yeah I tried painting the pillars and having them smooth like the ones above but just couldnt it the way I wanted it. And I spent a good 1-1.5 sanding each one too. So I dont know if I wasnt using the right grit of sandpaper or what but it didnt turn out like I had wanted it to. So I just wrapped them in suede/micro suede and I think its look pretty bad ass. I did the headliner in suede too. Which was a nightmare.. and isnt 100% but for my first time doing anything like this.. I am very proud and think it looks great.
