i was going to paint my heat shield w/ the 500 degree paint that i used on my valve cover and was wondering if that will be good enough or should i use a 1200 degree paint?

I would think that you would be fine with 500. Really no part of your engine is getting up to 500 degrees.

Chris

thanks chris. i actually just finished painting it so i'm really just looking for some reassurance. hehe

the exhaust manifold gets really hot, probably over 500

Yeah, the manifold gets WELL over 500 degrees. Sorry to say but that paint WILL chip off and it should do it quickly. The manifold gets hot enough to discolor the metal, so I'm sure it'll chip the paint off...

can i use the 500 degree paint as a primer and spray the 1200 on top or do i have to start from square 1 again?

I'd start from the beginning.. No sense in having to do it all over again after it's had time to *really* cure and set.

yeah, the internals of the engine tend to stay under that (i.e. your water temp reading and stuff like that) but the actual manifold will get a bit hotter...

thanks everybody. i'm going to redo it now, just had to wait for the temp to warm up outside. it does look pretty sweet however w/ the gloss black that's on there now

Hey man I took a temp reading after a ... spirited drive today and got 225 degrees at its hottest point on the outside.

I guess I am too late... oh well. Good luck.

i painted mine blue twice with 1200 and just faded(about 1,000 miles), it just gets way to hot.
i used 1200 black and it has been fine for 6,000 miles so far, i would stick with black or get it powdercoated a color.

yeah i am painting it black. it looked really good w/ the gloss black but it was only 500 degrees so i used some 1200 and it isn't quite as purty. plus i accidentally flipped it over on the newspaper so there are now a few imperfections that i will have to sand off. i'll post pics in the morning when i put it on.

I painted mine black the same time I painted the valve cover red. I used 1200 degree paint. It looks really good so I am sure you will be happy.
