Overboost on stock setup... ongoing problem. (!!UPDATE NEW TURBO!!!)

UPDATE!!!!!!!!!!!! SO i took it into service because it was making that whine sound from the wg, they called mazda and the next day i had a new turbo and wg acuator, everything is perfect now. Boosts 6.5 stock, and with unichip 10-12.

Wierd thing is, it deffinitlly pulls harder @ 6psi than it used 2, ive had a few friends in teh car and they noticed it without me saying anything about a new turbo. I wonder if the "turkey" compressor surge... actually causes a decrease in performance after some miles... hrm... o well fmic and a addition bov here i come... anyway wanna loan me 1500$???

Hey guys, been about 8 months since ive posted here, dealing with life. Anyway im starting to get some time to deal with some problems ive been having with my msp from way back.

When i first got this car (my second msp) it was making 6 pounds with MAYBE a 1/2 pound overboost. Threw on the corksport 2.5" exhaust and would get a 1 to 1 &1/2 pound overboost, no biggie. A few weeks later i threw on the unichip. Everything worked fine, 6-7&1/2 pounds on stock boost, 10-13 pounds once i switched the unichip boost controller on. Worked fine for about i dono maybe 2 months. Then one day i started seeing 15-17 pounds!!! i swaped the boost guage and got the same results. If i was running stock boost map, it wouldnt overboost at all but as soon as i switched to the higher boost map it would spike to around 17 and steady around 15psi!!!!

I talked with unichip, repalced the boost solinoid(sp) with the same results. Eventually i got wrapped up in life and quit worrying about running more than stock boost.

So here Iam 20k miles later with the same problem, only now, even on stock boost sometimes i get a spike of 10psi and it sits around 8. I dont dare try and switch the boost controller on for fear of having a 20psi msp... for about 200 feet anyway.

So i guess what im asking for is if anyone who has been on the boards more has seen anyone with the same problem....or maybe somethin similar? heard anything like this?

All the information ive gotten has pointed to the wastegate actuator as the problem. The thing is you cant order just the actuator from mazda, you have to order the ENTIRE assembly for almost 3k!

Thanks guys and sorry if some of the words are ****** up, im trying to type on one of those dam ergonmic keyboards.

Check for cracks on your vacum lines or just replace them all. That sound like your leaking somewhere.

Well after they replaced my vacuum lines with bulk silicone hose I was running 16PSI. After a few thousand miles I took it back in and from what I can tell they did something to the wastegate.
Funny thing is if I would have replaced the hose myself or adjusted the wastegate it would have voided my warranty :)
However, now at 70k+ miles it would seem that my wastegate is getting cooky again. It will boost to about 15PSI no matter where the controller is set. I have two JoeyP's but I think both have gone bad. I hope it is the MBC's otherwise down the road I will have to get myself a new manifold and a bigger turbo maybe a GT30R (glare)
Muhaahaa!!!!
Ok, maybe I would need a new engine to go with it :)

Thx for the comments.

Since vacume line is cheap, ill replace it all this weekend, no biggie.

If that ends up not bein the problem.... where can i get the acuator? i couldnt find one that someone could tell me YES FOR SURE IT WILL FIT ON YOUR MSP, it was more like, "hrm, should, but if you install it you cant take it back"
So where can i get this one for 150$?

malfunctioning wastegate?!

You can replace the wastegates w/o buying a new turbo. PM me if your interested.

how much?

I replaced the vacume line to the WG this weekend, same problem. The wierd thing is, its the actuall wastegate that whistles like a vacume line does when it has a crack. Its comming from inside the wg... ever seen that?

You still haven't replaced the actuator yet? That was the suggested problem when you first had the issues.

That does sound like the problem. However, with so many people having this issue it seems like replacing it with another stock one won't fix anything.

This all sounds so familiar, but all I did was put a hardpipe on my hotside with a Greddy BOV and now all of a sudden I'm spiking upwards of 12 to 14 psi then falling down to say 11 or 10. Weird I tell you, Weird. I'm thinking about putting stock pipe back on just to test my theory. We'll see what happens. But once I put that hardpipe on the car it started pulling like a mofo. Anyway, I have no idea either about this weird boost spiking problem.

i'd have to agree, check the actuator or it could just be a bad connection with the hose, or a leak or crack as suggested.

I checked all my connections on several occasions and i had this same problem a long time ago when i used to run 14psi after doing it for a month or so i started spiking and stopped. This was 30,000 miles ago. I'm thinking its a wastegate.

Has anyone replaced they're wastegate yet and got this problem resolved?

I just read a thread where 1 guy had a wastegate that was leaking, he blew into his vac line with his mouth and it leaked. THe other guys didn't leak. I just blew into mine and it leaked badly. I know i don't blow 6psi. Could this cause spikes and also is yours doing this too Sonicraz.

Well if your only blowing into the one hose then that should work, sounds like your on to something. I want to try this as well, but My line goes to the old BPV line which is capped and then into the manifold. I'm going to pull the one off the manifold and blow into it and see what happens. That's makes perfect sense, if the line is leaking then it'll take more psi to push open the wastegate then normal. Good idea, well done!
