Over filling the gas tank, is this a practice that should be avoided?

Depending on how far I am driving I occasionally overfill my gas tank. Should I avoid this at all cost

It caused a lot of damage in Hyundias years ago. I've not seen anything on this forum about it, still not a good idea.
 
I do one click extra. I often hear people doing 10+ clicks . The extra 5 miles is not worth the possibility of poisoning the charcoal canister.
 
... so you're really allowing your self to go an extra 8 miles between fill-ups??? ...
Different vehicles I've had can take a significant amount of fuel after the "click off". As an example, a Ford focus I had would take nearly 2 more gallons after the initial click off. So, 15% more fuel in the tank. Another 80 miles of range.

But I'm a "only time you've got too much gas is when your on fire" kinda guy :p

There are surely differences in the size of the fill pipe.
I get the feeling that the click off isn't the same at different stations. Usually I put in a little extra and I've never had any trouble.
 
My neighbor is 75 years old and has been smoking three packs of cigarettes a day for over 40 years. He doesn’t have lung cancer….

I have been told that topping off the tank (to the point of overflow) would saturate the charcoal canister with liquid in many/most/all Chrysler vehicles. The system may then be unable to extract the liquid and will set a code. The canister must be replaced. I haven't heard of another system that suffers this way. On a trip, the extra gallon I can get in the tank after the first or 2nd shut-off is well worth the trouble. Thirty miles might mean not walking.

I filled until I could see fuel for years on my Miata, until the day the check engine light came on after a fillup. Dropped it off at dealer and later got a call saying that there was fuel in the fuel tank air pressurization pump - did I ever fill the tank beyond auto pump shutoff? This was a 700$ education. I no longer overfill any vehicle.

I haven't heard of another system that suffers this way.
My 1998 Honda CR-V did trigger the CEL from charcoal canister malfunctioning many years ago at around 120K miles. I had been filling up the gas tank as much as possible often due to the small gas tank. I reset the code, and have been filling up the gas tank after a couple of clicks. Have never seen the same CEL since then now at 178K miles.
 
There will be a lot of "I do it all the time with no damage", but I say, weight the upside (so you're really allowing your self to go an extra 8 miles between fill-ups???) vs downside. - easy choice.
I'll never understand why people drive until they are running on empty and on fumes.
Why would you wait until you have maybe five miles of range left before filling up? Talk about creating anxiety. What is the guarantee that you will find a gas station at the last possible moment?
I just don't get it.
I fill up when I'm at a quarter tank. No range anxiety, and no panicking if I need to go somewhere in an emergency, like to a hospital with a sick kid. I can't imagine getting into my car and having to get somewhere in a hurry, only to have to stop to get gas because I was too lazy to do it earlier, and instead, ran it down to a teaspoon in the tank.
