Sorry if I'm in the wrong section or this wasn't brought up, but I was wondering what type of brands you guys are running for oil? Obviously synthetic and I've read that switching to 5w-40 is better because the 5w-30 is thinner and is one of the potential causes of the deadly "smoking k04" but I was wondering if there is a specific type of oil thats best for our cars?

On other car forums, they have lists of whats proven best to least... I haven't heard of anything right now for our cars.

I'll be due for an oil change in the near future but a close friend is getting a special deal on Royal Purple oil, which from what I heard is pretty good, for some cars the best oil you can get.

I'm thinkin' we discuss different kinds, share opinions, and provide some prices. Even changing your own oil could be a help to.

your gonna get a range of answers on this. check out bobistheoilguy.com for more information than you could ever want on the subject.

I personally use the original fill motorcraft 5w30 semi-syn. its only 3.29/qt and seems to hold up well.

as for the 5w40 vs 5w30, it comes down to if you are seeing smoke or not. i personally have only ever seen smoke after the dealer did the very first oil change with 5w20. i yelled at them, switched it to 5w30 and have not seen anything since.

if you are seeing anything, 5w40 is a great place to start.

I've tried several, but have found good luck with Amsoil. Their synthetic 5w-30 and Euro syn 5w-40 have worked well. If you do their preferred customer pricing ($20/yr) it comes in around $80 for 12 qts.
