Oil change intervals

yeah with my comute two summers ago i had to change every month as well....
Also my fried is at 100500k on his car and it's a 2001....

people drive like crazy... But then again thats what the cars are made for....

yeah that is a good point...high compression or turbocharging will cause the need for more frequent oil changes...compression more so, because you get more heat all the time regardless of how hard to you drive...which deteriorates the oil faster...and flogging a turbo'd engine often will create huge amounts of heat throughout the engine...doing the same thing, but a turbo'd engine out of boost will be no harder on the oil than the stock engine for the most part...

A good way to gauge oil change needs is to moniter fuel consumption...I have been too lazy to do this, but its a great way to do it...figure you get roughly 30 mpg regulary...So then say you need to change the oil after every 200 gallons of gas (roughly 6,000 miles with normal driving, which is pretty standard for mild engines with synthetic oil... and sorry for you Canadians...too tired to convert right now)...But this works well because if you drive harder, you get less miles per gallon...which gets to 200 gallons consumed with less overall mileage than you normally would have...and vice versa, you baby it you could get possibly 8,000 miles out of 200 gallons...

I have been meaning to do it this way for a while, but always forget to track the gallons...I will definately do it with the built engine though...

wow... let's see, 200 gallons divided by the average fillup of 10 gallons, and that's 20 fillups. Don't know if I got that in me! lol more power to you, though (no pun intended)

lol, some kid in a turbo integra came by work yesterday and asked us to put the mobil 15,000 oil with puralator filter, he bought the car turboed for 4 grand

it was funny how little he knew about cars (rofl2)

sooo many opinions....

Can't say i am a very harsh driver, but i like reving high.... So i don't know.... So far it seems like 5k is fine....

vik, if are going to change every 5k use dino stuff. if you are using mobil 1 wait at least till 7K. i change between 7-10K. oleg goes about 10K between changes.

Yah, I haven't been able to find that 15K oil here in Canada yet. Is it really worth it? and can it really protect that long?...

The reason I ask is because I am more of a "driveway" mechanic so my oil interval is roughly 6000Km approx. 3500Miles (don't know if that's right) but that's in the summer. I do my last oil change around mid-Sept. to get ready for the cold weather, but she doesn't see an oil change until April, that's roughly 13000 kms. I've always used Mobil 1 5w30, but the consistency of the oil every is waaayyy dark and thin every April, and I figured this might be the trick.

synthetic oil is made to last longer than dino oil. the regular mobil 1 one can easily to 10K or not more with a filter change.....the new extended life mobile oil the the same stuff, just with a different name to get new customers i believe.....

Mobil 1 and the new stuff are not the same from what I heard...Although Mobil 1 is arguably not truely a "fully synthetic" engine oil...that new stuff is not synthetic at all...Just a gimmick system similar to what Valvoline is running with that "extended" oil line...I may be wrong though...but that stuff is only like 2 bucks a quart around here...where Mobil 1 is nearly $5...

the have the 7500 mile 12000 mile and the 15000 mile. i believe the 15K version is the mobil 1 synthetic stuff they have now. the 7500 and 12000 are just the extension dino oil like other companies have......

That's what I thought as well (yes)

companies will do anything to make the consumer believe that their products are new and better than previous versions or other competitors.....

Sounds good...I never looked into it...

Ever since the very first oil change I have used Mobil 1...10w 30 in the winter and 5w 30 in summer...roughly 5k-6k miles before each change...

Red Line 5W30 in the winter, 10W30 in the summer. Mazda brand oil filter for the V6 626. Every 2500 miles, and what a hard 2500 those always are... At 87k, my car has started burning oil pretty quickly (Well, too quickly for my liking), so once I get my head back from DPR after getting coated in multiple places, and tanked and cleaned and all that, we'll have to see if that fixes the massive oil burning I'm getting now.

Huh your car burns oil? I haven't noticed that in my car yet. Granted it's not even at 50K miles yet. Then again my probe never burned oil at 117k.... Burning oil is VW territory. They do it even when new. My parents 2004 VW golf has quite an apetite for both gas and oil.... and it is at 13k miles....

My car is decidedly un-stock... Very, very unstock. =) It didn't start burning oil TOO fast 'till my last autocross, about 1k miles ago or so, which was also the first of the season... I think I was just bein' too rough on it.
