Official 'Smoking Turbo' response from Mazda

sti or evo?? both similar to the ms6 in handling.. but nothing like them ms6 in interior.. maybe an older 335i AWD.. VW R32.. idn just throwin ideas out there.

Its been over a month now after the dealer switched me to synthetic and smoke has been appearing here and there the entire time. Recently it has been very prominent and occurs EVERY time i idle for more than 30 seconds, even at stop lights. My car wreaks of burning oil and I am taking it back tomorrow to see what they will do with me. I am taking all the info from this thread with me in the hope they might dick me around a little less. Thank god for this board and its extremely informed members!

I'm in the process with a local Mazda Dealer ship about my smoking issue on my 07' mazdaspeed 3. I have 43,300 mile on my car. the smoking started to happen at around 36,000 miles. the dealer ship said my oil change records were good but MAzda corp is now asking to bring my car back in so they can remove the valve cover and take pictures. to me this sounds like they are looking for an excuse to not cover this.. which i think is just an excuse to not replace the turbo. or fixing the issue
have any of you guys thought about contacting an emissions board since so many of us are having this problem? I'm thinking about contacting C.A.R.B ( California air regulations board) to let them know our issue. since it seems so many of us are having a problem but mazda doesn't seem to want to do anything about it. the smoking is so bad on my car that 30secs after start up it is smoking... i could not pass smog like this.

I am completely stock by the way

Mazda dont want change ur turbo for sure. couple weeks ago i went to mazda to have mine checked out and they said that i had to much oil in my car, before i dropped my car off at mazda i checked my oil level and it was good but when i came back to pick up my car i did have an extra quart of oil which they added to my car, they dripped the oil all over my engine bay and didnt even bother to clean it up. I couldn't believe this s***

Jim Ellis Mazda in Marietta called and said I was approved for a new turbo. Should be ready next week and I will keep you all updated

I've now been approved for a new turbo. Goes in Wednesday. Took two visits, with switch to 5w40 synth oil on both, and a service history from CarMax since I bought it used there. According to Mazda, there is no official service history in their records for this car in the first 12k before I bought it. Car Max had changed rotors and pads and put 5w30 synth in before they sold it.

Well...mine is starting to smoke again. Put in Rotella 5W-40 almost two months ago and today while idling at a stop light, I could smell and see the smoke.

Any more updates? I don't feel like taking off my minor mods (SRI, TIP, OCC, and boost tubes) just to go into the dealership with this. I've kept my oil change records on the mazdausa site but that's it.

i know this sucks man but if i were you i would take off my intake and inlet and check for shaft play(it shouldn't have more that 1mm of play) that way you gonna know for sure if ur turbo is blown and if it is take it to mazda

ugh...I guess I might do that. Looking into getting the PTP pill fix too. Thoughts on that? Seems like the results are mixed. Wonder if it'll help since mine only has minor bolt-ons and stock exhaust components.

The pill

I got smoke after a lengthy idle from a cold start last summer and put the Pill in place. The idea is a restriction in an attempt balance the crankcase pressure venting by reducing the diameter to the inlet pipe. The pressure balance is supposed to help the turbo shaft from being overloaded in one direction to another and causing seal wear. At least that was how i understood it. The folks who have mentioned, checking end play are imo correct. And it is good advice if you are up for it. Once you have excessive play it's probably too late for the pill and heavier oil is just a patch.
By the way it is easy to rebuild and the parts are cheep. ( i have not done this yet. But i will. ) The cause of oil buildup is still discussed. but the rebuild is not a bad learning tool to do it yourself.
As far as the effectiveness of the pill, not so sure. so i cannot recommend it. I still have alot to learn and am no expert by any means!
I personally just want a bigger ball bearing turbo anyways. less boost less heat more power!!

Anyone got an idea if mazda is still working on pcv fix?

I have been using Motul 5w-40 since the 2nd oil change around 6000Km and i'm now at 31000Km. I never had smoking issue even if i'm in the VIN range of the TSB. As someone else stated, i dont let it idle a lot so i might just not see it. I also dont have any other mods than a synchronic BPV and a CP-E CAI and a boost gauge, all parts dealer approved.

I will try to idle it for 10 min when its over 0 celcius.

Got my MS3 back yesterday. They replaced the turbo, and the down tube. They said the bolts were frozen and they had to hack things (my language not theirs) to get the turbo off.

My butt dyno tells me the MS3 is running a LOT better than before. Much smoother up the power curve.

Spent the day bactracking oil and oil filter purchase receipts. I have an appt. Monday to bring in my MS3. The service manager was aware of the bulletin. The dealer has only replaced one turbo thus far and it was on a CX-7. They currently have another MS3 there for the smoking turbo, but it's modded pretty heavily.

She said they'll have to replicate the issue; might be able to skip the 5W-40 step since I'm currently running it; they'll snap pics of the car and submit it to Mazda. Even though I don't have all four receipts of my oil changes, I do have three of them. Hopefully that will suffice. Will report back Monday...
