Official 'Smoking Turbo' response from Mazda

better safe than sorry, but i hope they are reasonable just the same> good luck Hank with your adventures!

Thanks! The ladies behind the customer service desk at Walmart were trying to find the exhange receipt for when I exchanged the 5W-30 PP stuff for the Rotella 5W-40. The SM at Mazda said that probably would be helpful so that they won't have to do go through the process of changing out oil.

Alas, they couldn't find the receipt since I didn't know the day the exchange took place. Gonna try and see if I can find any posts on here that would narrow down the days when I did the exchange.

Took off the SRI, TIP, and OCC today and put her back to stock. Couldn't get the car to smoke at all afterwards. Drove the car for 10 minutes at 3K RPM and then let it idle for over 5 minutes. And then did it again tonight...and still nothing. Maybe the smoke I saw earlier this week was just condensation. Who knows. I'm returning the OCC to Matt since there wasn't a single drop collected for the past two months. Stock PCV is working fine as Matt and I troubleshooted once, and I tested the vacuum today and all was good. Turbo has no shaft play at all.

I called the dealership and left a message cancelling my appt. I said that I will call to re-schedule at a later time.

Maybe the 5W-40 is still working. We'll see how that car runs the next couple weeks. Will report back if anything changes.

hm sounds like your turbo is ok, the only thing i can think of is PCV valve
but see what mazda says first :)

I'm not going to bring it in until it starts smoking again. It's too much of an ordeal to bring it in.

Tested to see if the stock PCV was working today and it was that I could tell. Oh well...we'll what happens in the next 10K miles. That's all that's left of the warranty :)

I searched some other threads after I posted and the turbo is part of the powertrain warranty. So make that 34K miles left!!! LOL.

Also noticed that my oil pan ihas a very small leak between its seal and the transmission. Looks like there have been others with the same issue and by the looks of it somewhat common. So maybe I can kill two birds with one stoen if/when I bring it in.

I took mine in again for the smoke and they did the full synthetic 5w oil change. Told me to wait month and bring it back but both the manager and mechanic said they had never seen the thicker oil work. Just had to jump through the hoop anyways. (I got a free oil change so I was fine with that!) The manager did say that Mazda was "Close" to getting a fix out and said it was one of the seal that's bad and not the PCV. He did say that he was just repeating what he was told by a Mazda engineer though.
He told me that when I bring it in next that Mazda NA has to send a guy out to approve me for a new turbo. Could be a couple days just to get approval and that it could be denied since mine doesn't smoke that bad. I said Well, maybe not yet but we both know it's coming." He agreed.
I'll believe the fix when I see it. I believe the manager but someone may be pulling his leg though. He did confirm it's a powertrain issue, I have seen some dealers try and say it is not.

....... I'm returning the OCC to Matt since there wasn't a single drop collected for the past two months. ........

Hank, if he OCC has nothing in it then it either wasn't connected properly, the hose(s) are plugged, or the PCV connected backwards if you had a second PCV valve in the hose. This may be your smoke problem as well. Something was definitely wrong with the OCC install.

The odd thing is that the OCC was working fine for about a month. I drained it twice and about a 1/4 cup of gunk came out both times. And then nothing came out. I'm sure it was installed properly. Matt and I troubleshooted it over the phone a few times to make sure the stock PCV was in working order and made sure everything was hooked up properly. Hoses weren't plugged either when we took everything off. OCC works fine as it drains water when I put it through the ports.

ive had the ptp pvc fix "the pill" and i think its the biggest scam. it does not work. i have had it on the car for like 2 months now and still smokes like a chimney. anyways just thought id let you all know not to waste ur money.

Just talked to my dealership on the phone and they stated the O2 sensor is making my car smoke...WTF? Anyone have a response for that?

well i am looking forward to how this turns out! So they are going to replace the sensor? please keep us updated, maybe they have some secrets up their sleeves!!
Best of luck anyways buddy

They first told me it was a bad pcv and replaced it. Of course it wasn't a bad pcv but they insisted. It was warranty work so I didn't argue.
They will likely not budge on the O2 sensor theory so let them do it if it's under warranty. Bring it back in a month when it's still smoking and they will hopefully try the 5w oil change and then go that route. If they don't, bring up the TSB about the smoke. They likely already know though.
At least you got a new O2 sensor out of it.
