Official 2026 Mazda CX-5 Pics and Details Released

Australian release says

The all-new Mazda CX-5 will launch with a 2.5-litre SkyActiv-G four-cylinder engine which produces 132kW (177hp) and 242Nm (178f/lbs) of torque*. (Down from 140kW but up to 252Nm)

This engine is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission and standard i-Activ AWD. The 2.5-litre powertrain package has proven itself as a popular, reliable offering from Mazda, and this latest iteration has been recalibrated for greater flexibility, with an emphasis on offering both sharper response and also a more relaxed, quiet demeanour, based on how the vehicle is driven.

“A hybrid powertrain will be confirmed for the Australian market at a later date.”

IIRC, those are inline? Not sure...
Yes, inline 6 and too long for the transverse mounting position on the CX-5.

But the hybrid technology in the 70/90 applications is not the same as the Toyota-based system in the CX-50.

The hybrid CX-70/90 hybrid use a 4 cylinder engine, not the inline 6. It is setup for transverse mounting/ rear wheel drive, but it could potentially be configured differently. It is pretty much the same 2.5L engine with the electric motor replacing the torque converter between the engine and the transmission. The transmission is different though. it is a 8 speed that may not work in fwd duties. I am not sure about that.

It's a 2.5L inline 4 just like the one in the CX-5 (all current 4's are inline except the Subaru and Porsche boxer motors). They don't use the I-6 in the PHEV. It seems ridiculous for Mazda not to have designed the new 8-sp to work with both FWD and RWD as they aren't going to stop production of the FWD models.

it's not about power, it's about 0-60 and cornering abilities
Not sure what you mean. More power = better 0-60 times. Of course, "performance" is in some ways subjective, as a hybrid model will be heavier than the current 2.5T model due to the increased size of the car and the weight of the battery. Many like a lighter car (not that the 21 GTR that you and I drive is considered "light").

CX-50 PHEV is more than a second slower than CX-50 Turbo and that's the same weight
I keep my fingers crossed for the heavier CX-5 2026 PHEV to have at least the same 0-60 as 2025 Turbo

Err, no it isn't. The CX50 Hybrid is 200lbs heavier than the turbo.

And given the hybrid's Toyota drivetrain only gives a combined output of 219 hp, 163 lb-ft, vs. the turbo's 256 hp, 320 lb-ft., I'm surprised that the 0-60 time of the turbo is only 1.2 secs faster.

Because of the transmission on the hybrid?

Can the manufacturers please stop with these oversized iPads on the dash?...SMH

Also, I read that the interior materials are a step down. More cheap plastic.

300k+ cars x 5-10$ savings at least (may be more) ...easy 3+ million in savings. Save a mil. here and a mil. there ...bigger bonus for the VPs.

Plus it easier to manufacture at scale just a big screen, dump all in software and a generic dash without holes, no connectors, no wiring, etc

And every second your attention is drawn to the display menus while driving poses a safety risk, which can result in the greatest possible loss - one that cannot be measured in money.

Yes. its kind of strange from Mazda which for years did not allow touch on the infotainment claiming safety while everybody else did allow it. And now its 180 degrees the opposite
