Spy Shots: 2009 Mazda6 caught naked with new curves

Last September at the Frankfurt Motor Show, we made the claim that the new Euro-spec Mazda6 was bringing sexy back to the midsize sedan market. The version slated for sale in the United States will do the same, but not because it's identical to the one designed for Europe. It's not. These spy shots from Brenda Priddy & Co. show a completely naked prototype that was caught in Detroit. Though at first glance it looks exactly like the 6 that debuted in Frankfurt last year, closer inspection reveals many changes to the car, which corroborates reports we've heard that the U.S. version is also markedly different underneath its skin. Follow the jump for a review of the changes in store for U.S. customers.

Up front, we've noticed that this Mazda6 prototype features an open grille with a single crossbar, as opposed to the honeycomb-like grille of the European version. The lower air intake is also entirely different, with a pair of fog lights now placed as far apart as possible. Finally, the hood on this caught car features a pair of soft subtle creases, whereas the bonnet of the Euro-spec model gets a single, sharp crease down the center. The headlamps and taillights are completely different, and the rear of the car is also all new. The U.S. version will feature a pair of sporty exhaust tips integrated into its rear apron, which itself also features more curves than the Euro version.

It's difficult to know in this case whether we should be envious of our kin across the pond as we know nothing about the mechanicals of the car you see above. Whether the two cars turn out to be identical in that respect or not (probably not), at least we're guaranteed a design that is both unique and familiar at the same time.

The back looks a little better, the front is hideous.
Hope we can swap bumpers with the JDM version...

Wow, why the hell did they have to go do that? I like almost every aspect of the euro one more.

yeah I think the car looks really ugly. Kind of looks like a toyota camry or a kia with a mazda badge. The ones out now are perfect in my opinion. Why change a good thing.

From the back it looks way better than the jdm one, kind of reminds me of the millenia s which is a very handsome car.

Yeah, the back isn't too tragic, but why did they have to move the license plate up high instead of keep it on the bumper?!?

+1 current 6 design. Who's idea was it to merge the 8 style fenders with the entire lineup? The miata kind of has it, but not as much as the new 6 if you look carefully at the lines.

I don't know why I didn't see that one coming. I'll pass on the 6 thanks, Mazda.

I do suspect that it's nothing a new grill wouldn't fix for the most part. The current 6 has had 3 or 4 different grills at least, and I've only liked the MS6's and maybe one other.

It seems like they are taking the RX8 front end with the fender shapes, etc and trying to adapt it to all of their cars. I think they did a pretty good job on the CX7 but it doesn't look that good here. I agree that the front end is hideous

Glad to see the exhaust outlets made it from the original spy shots taken back in Michigan last year. That was the only thing that Europe didn't get, and the only thing I like about the 'new' 6.
