Mazda 323 S BA (Protege) 1995
Hello! New here... it's really a bummer to find such a nice forum everytime I have some serious problems and then be the pain in the ass already as a newbie. But here it goes...

I have mazda protege, 1995, Z5 engine (1.5 DOHC). In the last two weeks or so I was beginning to notice an annoying glitch. I really don't know how to describe it because I'm not a native speaker - at app. 2000 rpm in any gear (except R) the car somewhat catches a strange rpm interval and it just doesnt accelerate smoothly - it is galloping or smth... I just can't find the right word. :) This glitch goes away really quickly and it is only noticeable when accelerating gently. It just feels like the calculation of the fuel-air mixture isn't right in that milisecond and it just shakes front and back for a couple of times. I must repeat that this is not intense as if the fuel configuration would be totally corrupt. Me and my buddy mechanic noticed ripped air intake hose and we replaced it. The problem stays the same. Any clues? I was thinking maybe dirty gasoline or something. Or perhaps sparks, cables? I have checked those and the seem fine - sparks aren't greasy, cables do not exceed the current...

If there's anyone out there with answers I would appreaciate their help and effort.

Thanks and cheers to the community! ;)

Where's the problem with your english? The fact you said "Me and my buddy" instead of "My buddy and I" ??? You speak really well. Do you guys have the OBDII computer system over there for your cars? If so, get a hold of a scanner and plug it into the OBD2 port and see what faults it gives you, if any. If you don't have OBDII, you may have another similar system with another name. Start there.

Okay, seriously this time. I have found out that what I am experiencing is called surging. And I get a lot of surgin during cruising. If I accelerate slowly, the car just surges at app. 2000-2100. I know that the revolutions are low but sometimes you just catch that level wether it is because of the traffic or just a moment.

Okay, let's get to the businees. Since the regular engine tune-up (oil, air and oil filter, battery check, hoses inspection) I have also done the following:

- new air intake hose
- fuel filter replacement
- main fuse replacement
- PCV valve inspection and hose replacement (a little tear)
- distributor cap disassembly, and wiping the moisture since it was greasy all over on the underside (2nd & 4th cylinder - L-R)
- spark hotwires replacement, since 2 and 4 oxidized

What else can I do? I cannot measure the fuel pressure because I don't have a gauge and the fuel filter replacement was a pain in the ass (sorry for the language). Should I try with new spark plugs? Should I take my baby for a diagnosis? Are the injectors the case? I must say that there's no sign of stalling or any lack of combustion. It's like a slight tremolo if considering music. It's not much but it's noticeable and I want to solve the problem. I even don't know the nature of it ... is it fuel/air system, electricity, clutch, gearbox?

Any ideas? Please, help...

I have heard, maybe not from this forum but possibly in imazda or club protege that a member there replaced absolutely almost everything and it turned out to be the electronic advance "in" the distributor. I do not know much about it but his was surging and would only operate smoothly at high rpm/s and idled just fine.

most every car now has a variable valve timing, where the timing changes and you get more power. since it is this consistent, i bet it is the vvt kicking in and you get more power (be happy for more power)
