New trans needed at 35k?

I had been getting a high pitched electric trans whine for the past few months and finally took her in. It really wasn't that bad but with the radio off you could definitely hear it.
Get the call tonight they can't fix and a new tranny is going in. Car was driving fine other wise. I guess the noise was much more pronounced when run on the lift. 2013 GT

Well, glad they're going to take care of it for you. What dealer are you going to? Asking because I live near you in Kingsville. I don't have a CX-5 yet but probably will in a year or so.

Also saw that you have, or have had a 911. I had a 1970 911T at one time. It had too many problems for me to keep. My '73 914 2.0 was my favorite car ever. Someone else liked it well enough to steal it.

There's a TSB about that. Bearing misalign and the official solution is replacement.

From craigo's link

This is caused by a damaged bearing in the transaxle due to improper configuration of the transaxle case. A modification has now been implemented on automatic transaxles with the serial number 3TR1111680 and higher or 3TD1104906 and higher. The serial number can be found on top of the transaxle case near the manual shaft lever.

I wish mine would start whining so I could get a new transmission! Not that there is anything wrong with mine.

Car is being serviced at Heritage Mazda on York. Yes, I've got a 76 911. It's a dream.

Not downplaying that the potential transmission issue isn't there on the '13s and early '14's but not seeing a stampede of reports about this issue. We all know that everyone is quick to report failure on forums too.

Again...not downplaying issue by those affected as for those it is a big deal.

If I was potentially affected I would just be extra observant while warranty was in effect.

For those that are concerned you might consider picking up one of the 10/100 Mazda TotalCare warranties.

MEPP EXTENDED WARRANTY - TOTALCARE COVERAGE PLAN

The TotalCare Coverage Plan offers near-complete coverage for your Mazda vehicle, covering virtually every part in your Mazda vehicle (except for things like normal maintenance, etc.) TotalCare covers every component listed for the StatedCare Coverage Plan, plus many more, such as:
Electronic temperature control sensors
Vacuum and fluid reservoirs
Air bag, sensors and switches
Air bags
Rear defroster
All wiring harnesses
And much more
Items that are not covered include normal maintenance items and parts described in your vehicle's maintenance manual; squeaks, rattles, water leaks or wind noise; non-factory-installed radios and speakers; exterior metal; upholstery; trim; and convertible tops, glass, plastic or assembly. (Conditions apply; see your Mazda dealer for complete details.)

Not sure what these run these days but my parents picked up for around $1500 5 years ago on a '10 3-5 door

Maybe I missed it but I haven't seen a single transmission failure that was out of warranty. And considering a lot of 2013 CX-5's were delivered way back in early-mid 2012, that's saying a lot.

Isn't the transmission covered under the 5 year/60k powertrain warranty? Probably not a lot of vehicles at that point yet.

Our CX-5 was delivered mid 2012. No problems so far at 40K miles. But if there's going to be a problem I hope it comes up soon....before warranty expires.

Covered under that warranty.

••EDIT: IMO... I don't believe this is a widespread problem but obviously there are some out there.

It would be nice to know a little more background on the TSB. Questionable parts supplier, predominantly city driving, towing, fluid changes help, etc? I think of any car component I am most sensitive to transmissions. I had a failure as a kid at a time when I could least afford the repair.

Here is a little pricing info for out of pocket.
