I wish I had seen this one sooner
It seems like this keeps coming up over and over again every time I mention I am going with a T3/T4
I think what people need to realize is that first of all, the hybrid is definately not overkill for certain things. For instance if you drag race on the track or street (I've been known to go on the street, although I'm sure I'll hit the track whenever I have the urge once I have mine in) then it is much preferable to have the T3/T4 because you are most of the time pulling near the redline, which is where it's power at, compared to a T3 or even a 16g (not as much so on the latter) with much more punch in the midrange.
There are other reasons though. I think Spoolin said himself that he gets crazy wheelhop and spinning, and while that is really cool I like my tires and more importantly you want lag when you are dragging for the very reason that you want to launch quickly. Don't get me wrong, an LSD will fix it mostly along with mounts, but who wants to put extra stress on the tranny and tires when you just wanna take off?
Also, as Lowerdfool stated (funny, I just got the book this week and read that passage yestreday) the compressor is so light that it and the relating parts will make small difference in the spool-up. I bet some of you would be surprised to find out that in a proper set up, unless you floored it you would notice a minute difference between the T3 and the T3/T4.
I know this is getting long but there are so many reasons...another thing people keep emphasising is daily driveability, but part of that is keeping your car healthy. As a smaller turbo and one designed for lower end power than the hybrid, when you come near that redline, and are running your 10-12 lbs, things get HOT. Much hotter than the high-end capable T3/T4. If you ever want to downshift and hit that powerband, there is much less to worry about with a bigger turbo than with the T3 or 16g.
Lastly, as much as I LOVE low-end torque, I love revving high and pushing the redline way more. That's what the T3/T4 is for. But one thing that I am gonna stick to, that keeps getting discussed, is that although there are several Very different characteristics between the T3 and the T3/T4, lag is not one of them. I think when my set-up is done, I should easily be fully spooled by 3500. Now is that THAT different from the T3?
I know I am gonna get flamed up the ass, but hey I said what's on my mind all at once, finally. Just remember, different turbos for different drivers
