New FSP build

Come on out. My tires are getting close to the end of their life, so why not? We can work out a little deal for the muffler and a ride. Give me a call if you think you can make it.

Just got the new AutoEXE Big bore throttle body installed. On the corksport website, it says:
Replaces the factory throttle body of 55mm to a 60mm unit.

However, after removing the stock throttle body, I was like hey- this new one is not much bigger. I just measured the stock one at the inlet/outlet and it measured about 58mm. The AutoEXE was 60mm (as adverstised). Now, I just measured with a tape measure, and I wasn't measuring the actual diameter of the butterfly, so there still may be some differences with the butterfly and some of the other parts. However, I was a little dissappointed to see that it was only a 2mm difference and not the 5mm difference I was expecting. I have some other parts to install so I haven't test driven it yet. Hopefully it will work as advertised and improve performance- but I was a little disspointed that the stock one was bigger than I thought. I wonder if it was just 58mm for the 1.8L and it was sized down for the Mazdaspeed (the referenced part on the corksport website)? Or maybe I'm not measuring in the right places.

OK I feel better now. I measured the butterfly on the stock TB and it is 55mm. The stock TB tapers/steps in, whereas the AutoEXE is a straight bore. Then I drove the car around :) It feels significantly stronger now with the big TB, and the Corksport exhaust. Smooth power throughout the revs. Before there was a noticable jump at about 4000 rpms- and then a step down as it got toward redline (maybe around 5750). Its much smoother and feels stronger. I wish I had some dyno numbers to compare. I'll start looking for a dyno in town to see where I'm at.
The exhaust was not as much weightloss as Corksport said- they claim 20#s less. But I think that is due to the 2000 ES not having the second cat. My exhuast was stock pipes, with the Racing Beat (MP3) muffler. The new one (corksport power series) is much larger diameter, and weighs about 5 pounds less.
Also got a light Oddessy battery (13#), that was a 20# reduction. I've got a divisional next week, so I'll definately be putting it on the scales to weigh in after the latest round of mods.
With the AC, exhuast, battery, and wheels I was hoping to cut out 100 lbs, but its looking like it might be only 70 or 75.
Another upgrade was the brake pads. I forgot that my parents put some generic pads on it when they were using the car. I swapped em out with some Hawk HPS, bled all the brakes, and that is starting to feel much better.

Photo Update 2

Now photo of 275's (on 15x10.5) compared to 225's (on 15x8.5)

OK so got the test fit of the car with the 275's on the 15x10.5 Kodiaks. Looks like the tires would fit fine on a 9.5", so putting them on a 8.5" rim would probably work too. The 10.5 has plenty of stretch, so I think an 11 would probably be overkill.
My wheels are 5.75" backspacing, and they clear by roughly 3/8"-1/2" at the key suspension parts, so 6" backspacing should easily fit.
The only part that is questionable is when the car is turned one full turn on the wheel, the front edge of the tire looks to be slightly touching the plastic fenderliner. It should be fine though, as I don't really turn the wheel that much at an event. Another 1/4 turn is the lock, so its only close at basically full lock. We'll see how it all works tomorrow. I'm going to run the 275's up front, with 225's in the back. I did raise the suspension a little to give a little more clearance, so hopefully the setup should work.

damn, judging by those pics you'd imagine that the car actually made some power! ;)
That's a boatload of tire, and looks absolutely amazing. Are you staggering the setup at all, or are you going to do 15x10s w/ 275s all the way around?

And holes in the fender liner are legal in SP ;)

Test day went well. I haven't seen the final results yet, but I think I was faster than the C-Stock guys (that have typically been about half a second faster than me). It was hard to compare times to people no other FSP cars and really few Street Prepared cars. I was the fastest Street Prepared car, and I think faster than Street Mod as well.
Andy Holis was there in a STS Civic Si, and killed everyone- I'm pretty sure he had FTP. He beat me by about half a second or so.
The stagger setup- 275's up front, 225's rear- worked very well. I was prepared to have an oversteering monster, but the car drove very well and didn't really need to make any suspension adjustments throughout the day. The course was quite bumpy in a few spots and really tested the full travel of the front suspension, and the front tires only rubbed slightly in the area where the bumper meets the fender. Overall, very happy with the grip, and happy with the fitment. Now I just need some power to push it all along.
Despite the hot weather the tires didn't heat up as much as the 225's. It took a couple runs in the morning to get them working good. So I'll be needing a tire warmer (Justin) and all the blankets and crap at Nationals.
Gotta love that fresh Hoosier grip!

Oh man getting those things warm at Nationals is going to be rough. Especially if you get off line and go sliding!

It sounds awesome though. I want a set :D :D

Looks awesome, Jason.

I'm assuming where you autocrossed was warm?

Nats wasn't too warm for any of the days last year. Good luck getting those suckers to heat up! I'm considering running those on our DSP Corolla at Nats this year but probably will wait one more year (hoping Kumho will follow suit).

Awesome news Jason. Makes me want to bring the Pro5 out of retirement and have some fun in Street Mod. Hey...forgot to ask you what # you wanted me to register as.

i got to get a ride in this car at an event this weekend.... it was incredible, i didn't know a protege could do that.

Yep--that's what the AWRs + Hoosiers + a good driver can do! Jason's car has been looking particularly sexy lately :D

Thanks guys!
Its almost time. Just a couple of adjustments before nationals and we'll be good to go. I've got a fresh pair of 275's on the way. If we need to, we can try 275's all around. I'd definately want to TnT it first though. This past weekend it was HOT and the 225's on the back worked well, and I have room for adjustment both ways on the rear swaybar.
I think if we run the 275's on the back, we'll need to go full stiff on the rear bar. If the car is pushing too much to fix with air pressure we can switch out to the 225's and go back to the way I have been running it.
What do you think? I'm leaning toward going into the Test and Tune with 275's on all 4 corners. If that causes trouble, we can always go back to the 225's.
Looks like we'll be running in the First heat- Tuesday/Wednesday. Tire insulators will be in full effect between runs!

Good luck at nats, guys! I'll be pulling for ya! :)
