Drove a new Xterra last night. They only had an automatic on the lot but it was the V6. The ride is comfy in comparison to my MS6 and pickup. Headroom is fine, legroom is fine. Telescoping steering wheel would have been nice but it sits upright enough that I don't need it. It has some good features but overall fit and finish isn't as nice as anything Mazda has to offer. I suppose that's to be expected from more of a utility vehicle. It had decent power and the seats were OK. I wouldn't mind driving it around town or on the highway. We also drove an older 6 speed Frontier. Unfortunately it was poor example. A short shifter had been installed that was real choppy, it needed brakes,, and some other stuff. Anyway, it was a good test of whether I could drive the stick. It was fine. Not as fun as the REPU but more comfortable for sure. Looked at the new Frontiers and definitely not enough room for the dog in the quad cab (full 4-door). So anyway, the Xterra is not off the list. Sales guy was real nice and said they go down south every few weeks to pick up new certified pre-owned vehicles and he could keep a look out for something specific for us...or we could order a 2013.
I also looked at a few more campers. This market is a lot harder to judge by online photos. People seem to abuse the crap out of them and many don't really seem built to last in the first place. I looked at a 2008 this morning that I thought was going to be a sure thing. Turns out the photos did it way more justice than it should have. I guess the light weight ones have to make compromises somewhere, and the result is something that falls apart like a canvas tent. I don't want to spend a lot of money on one, but I don't want to live in a dirty 3 year old's playpen on the weekends either. Still leaning toward a fiberglass pod like camper. The fiberglass is light without being cheap and even the old ones seem to hold up...but they also hold their value and aren't cheap.
Anyway, once we figure out how much we want to spend on a camper, we'll figure out whether a new vehicle is in the cards too. Hey, just a thought, you think the SkyActiv-D CX-5 would have a higher tow rating when it comes out?
Speaking of tow ratings, I'm now rated for 6,000 lbs. Hah, not the truck, just the hitch

Couldn't find anything to mount to the frame rails but this hitch for a dodge bolted up to the cross bar after drilling a few holes. I was nervous at first, but there was a Dodge van getting a similar hitch installed and they did basically the same thing.
I don't have a photo but I installed a 7-pin 4-pin combo harness behind the plate last night. Completely hidden from view but easily accessible.
