nothing.. that was honest advice. I dig pathys.

Uh huh ;)

The way it was written read like "The XTerra is so bad, I'd take something as bad as a Pathy over that!"

But seriously, the Pathfinder is a solid ride. I think we're going for the Armada next though. It's more capable towing, and has more room for 2 boys + 70 lb dog + all our s***, and costs way less than the Land Crusher. God those things are expensive.

Lol.. Nobody asked you Muff :P

I still don't understand why the Land Cruiser is that bloody expensive. I could understand if it were 50ish, but 80?!?!!! I swear to god they must hide a faberge egg in each one just to drive the cost up.

Because everyone needs a Soccer Mom Assault Vehicle, duh

Keeping the RX-8. Had a few offers but nothing substantial that made me want to do it. I just have to much love into this car and it has been great to me. Maybe after another year I'll think about selling. Who knows. Lol!

The new pathfinder doesn't come in stick and you can't find old ones with a stick. I'm not driving an auto-tragic, especially a CVT. As far as older models go, aren't they on the same frame/drivetrain anyway?

I haven't test driven one yet, so we shall see whether I fit. I told Amanda the jury is out if it is uncomfortable even before reading your post. Every manufacturer does things differently so I'll pay careful attention to that. Keep in mind this is partly to satisfy Amanda's desire to own a Jeep. She still likes the Wrangler Unlimited but I don't like the way it drives, the top is a hassle and would rarely be taken off (but you have to deal with the road noise all the time), and then there's Jeep's reliability. I don't trust them and I don't want to invest in a company that has driven itself into the dumpster 3 times in my lifetime. We would probably split time driving it. I may end up in the Focus for drives to work if she really likes the truck. I'm ok with the focus but the seats are smallish like the Protege5 so I wouldn't want to take long trips in it.

So if stick shift, and 3,000lb towing capacity are my requirements, that leaves one other vehicle (unless I'm drawing a blank). The Toyota FJ Cruiser. However, it is a big "NO" from both of us because of the suicide doors. No offense to RX-8 owners but they are annoying. Our friends have an element and that's pretty much all they complain about.

I guess we could also look into small super-cab pickups, but I have a pickup, so I don't need another...and the utility of an SUV would get more use. More room for the dog, room to toss the bikes in it, etc. Given these 3 choices, which pretty much fall into a niche market, I'd say the Toyota is the best bet for reliability, the Jeep would be the best off road performer (if you get the Rubicon package), and the Nissan fits in the middle. It's still a truck, and will handle as such, but without a "truck" frame you won't get the towing capacity. So I guess I need to go drive it...and maybe drive an FJ just to be sure.

The real question is, what would you get instead, and would it make you smile as much when you rev to redline.

I love my "Freestyle" doors. So handy to just open it up when I want to put something in the back. Easier than walking around to open up the other door. ;)

Oh, and if I'm going to give up stick shift...which I really don't want to do, the CX-9 can haul 3,500 lbs. Would you pick a Pathfinder over a CX-9? They are close in price range. The Pathfinder can tow 5,000 lbs but I don't need that much.

Which is to say, it can't really haul much of anything. An Aluminum trailer + a miata = very edge of its hauling capacity (which is really not what you want). I looked into it... I wanted a Mazda to use as a hauler so bad, but sadly our options are "jack sh*t". Even Porsche and BMW had the foresight of building their big SUV with the ability in mind for their club racers to be able to haul their cars around (not why they were built, that was totally for the dollar signs, but at least it was an option). I didn't want to give up the stick shift either, but the Pathfinder was the right choice for us. Unfortunately the auto had a way better towing capacity than the manual. I've still got the VW (eww), the bike and the race car for stick shift fun

that's kind of what happened to me.

The new pathfinder vs the CX9?

As much as it kills me, I'd likely go with the pathfinder.

The auto vs manual towing capacities are pretty much politics and safety net. They don't want to replace clutches so they lower the value to cover their asses when someone burns out a clutch trying to get a boat out of a launch. The rest of the vehicle is identical, and manual transmissions don't overheat the same way, so it basically comes down to low speed gearing, the clutch, and possibly the final drive ratio (if it's different).

The trailer I'm looking at is somewhere between 1,500-1,700 lbs dry weight. Add supplies (propane, water, gear, etc) and it may creep up to 2,700 tops. So the CX9 is well within reason. Sure it's not a great tow vehicle, but it has more power than the Pathfinder. I'd just have to get a weight distribution hitch to limit rear sag. But I don't know. If it comes down to it, I'll test drive both and see which I like. I'd much rather buy a Mazda. I've had very good luck thus far and I'm sure there's probably an owner loyalty discount I could take advantage of...or I could make up my own to justify a lower price when negotiating.

My dad pulls his camper with a Mercedes ML320. No manual option, and they are kinda fugly, but whenever I borrowed it, I could get 25 mpg highway. Now... I'm not suggesting getting one, merely stating that some vehicles have abilities that many people overlook.

Yeah, Mercs are out of my price range. Definitely want to be under $30k. With my trade and cash down we don't want a loan more than $15k. Will consider pre-owned but has to be under 30,000 miles...and preferrably in NH or private seller since I'm not going to pay Mass sales tax if I don't have to.

I really don't want an automatic though. Really REALLY don't want it.

Wow lots going on. Interesting dilemma Chris.

Hope things go smooth Mike.

Arrived back in Canada today. Today was the worst driving, rain, snow, high winds. I think Mia needs a wash bad after being dragged 1500 miles.

Fully understood. Dad got a helluva deal on his ($9k), so his example isn't a good one.

Hmmm... you have my brain working, trying to think of available vehicles that meet your specs.

Quad cab Tacoma and Frontier are options as well I suppose....but the Frontier is essentially the same as the Xterra. I'll check it out this weekend when I go to the dealership. I say in the Taco at the car show. It was plain like every other Toyota, but I guess that's the norm for small trucks.

Hi. Nice short week. Took a PTO day yesterday and have Friday off. :)

Chris, my sis-in-law has an Xterra and loves it. Has never used it for towing but has had it for 4yrs now with no complaints. Just throwing in my .02.
