So... the reason I say that...

Let's say that they're wanting to generate about 75 MW to make the 75% of the demand. Wind generators are good for about 1 - 1.5 MW currently. Therefore you need 50 windmills built. Ok, but... their availability is 15% of the time. 18% if you're lucky. So worst case scenario, to have 75% generation, 100% of the time, you need around 334 windmills.

Our largest end customer for ceramics makes windmills... If there weren't windmills, I wouldn't have a job.

And you prefer....solar?

Oooo. Gotcha. Well there's plenty of non-pretty locations that windmills can be installed and no one would complain...

Depends...are you talking renewable power sources, or power sources in general?

I can relate with Jenn because my job is kinda shaky right now. Thankfully I'm on this nuclear project. There aren't any coal boilers coming down the pike...

Thx Jenn, he loves it outside. The vet says he's going to be a fairly big cat. Good thing he'll have plenty of outdoor fun.

QFT.....need more WTE IMO.

1)Not 15%...more like 20-40%. If you read the article you'd note that the winds in that area are nearly constant, so although it will never be 100% it sure will be way higher than 15%

2) It's going to cost the consumer's almost the same than what they're paying now for dirty energy.

I could care less how big it is. It's going to be 5+ miles off of any shore. Sure you'll see it, but it won't be this glaring eyesore.

Sure... but since there is no control over the wind, any estimate can be crazy high or crazy low. Not to mention the maintenance cycles, which according to some of the industry news magazines I get, can be often depending on speed and how frequent the wind blows. That also factors into the availability. But that's the same as any type of equipment that's used a lot.

The cost issue... now that's a fun one. To build all of them to make the demand that any other type of plant can provide is more expensive up front than long term. Your bill may go up to cover the costs of construction, but would the price go back down when generation becomes cheaper. Hmm... I don't know, but it's an interesting thought.

Personally, while the company that I work for does the boilers and environmental systems, I'm all for whichever makes the most sense all around. Right now, the technology isn't up to the level that many people think it is. But... this new project that I'm working on may be a great solution for clean power at a cheaper cost.

Let me just say that I'm not trying to start a pissing match. I've just been in contact with people who work at generation facilities and have heard the differences between all different types. A lot of people that I've met have voiced their opinions of how wind isn't all it's hyped up to be.

I'm reading about materials that I need to order because one of our vendors is dumb. a.k.a. being distracted. LOL.

Oh yea, been hearing about this debate for far too long now. Ugh! So tired of it going back and forth I could really care less. Most likely will not be here if/when it's completed.
