Mazda MX-6
so i installed a stereo in my mx6. When i hooked my battery back up the car wouldnt even want to start. so i went and got it tested and the battery went bad out of nowhere. i was gonna upgrade batteries anyways i just had to do it a bit sooner. i got a optima red top and the car starts perfectly fine. but mx6 alternators put out about 70-75 amps. my capacitor reads that im pulling over 150 amps. im wanting to know which alterntors can fit into a 95 mx6 4cyl. im wanting to get a high amperage alternator. anywhere from 150-200 amps. thanks for the help.

im running a pioneer 6.5 inch touchscreen with a 600 watt 4 channel amp for the speakers. and im running two polk audio tens. there 700 watts rms each and 1400 watt peak each. i have a 25 farad cap and a optima red top so far to help the power hungry-ness. my lights dont dim but i know i need a way better alternator because my cap says i pulled over 150 amps and my amp is only half way to where its suppose to be cause the subs are BRAND new and they require 20 hours of normal thump before you really push em. plus i need a bigger fuse on my 0 gauge wiring so i cant turn it up too far yet. is what i want to know is what other cars alternators will fit in there nice and snug. i know you can take out the a/c and put a second but i dont want to do that.

mhm i'm not really clear about what you have installed... one 4channel amp with 600rms max deliverance plus an amp for 2 10" subwoofer with 70rms? sorry, i dont get it yet? or do you run a fronsystem plus your subs @ a 4 channel amp with 4x70 rms? sorry,no clue right now.

just one thought: if your cap "read" the right values, you would've gotten into some trouble already, "dimming lights" would be your smallest problem.

mybad no there 700 rms each and 1400 peak each. i dont listen to the radio right now untill i atleast get a new alternator. but when i had the stereo not even 3/4 way up said i was pullin about 120 average and peaked the amperage out at 150 for that volume level atleast. my batery has 910 amps and 800 cca. so basically i pulled like 70 or so amps striaght off teh battery and i spent nearly 200 on the battery so i dont want to screw it up. im running 2200 watts on subs and 600 on 4 6x8 speakers plus touchscreen/navigation/12 disc changer

sorry,i don't operate in these heights, someone else will have to help you.

Please give me the brand and model of the amps and capacitor you have. Otherwise I have no idea what wattage ratings you are talking about.

Are you sure the "120" and "150" readings on the cap are not "12.0" and "15.0" voltage readings?

If you are pulling 150a continuous you are going to kill your battery in a matter of minutes...but before that happens you will go deaf. Seriously, that is alot of continuous power for any system. At full tilt, most systems don't draw more than 50-80a peak.

I was just about to say the same thing Chuyler said... also in terms of the MX-6 and different alternators, you are basically s*** out of luck unless you go for something completely custom, remove the A/C or get your alternator internals upgraded by a stereo shop good at doing so. To give you an idea, I had a 93' 4cyl MX-6 that at one point was pushing 4 Alpine 12" Type-R DVC subs each with there own MRV-1005 which put out about 600 watts RMS Each as well as 2 MRV-T501 to push the DDDRive compenents in the front doors and I-drive compnents in the rear deck. I had a Optima Yellow top and 3connected 5 farad caps supporting this off the stock alternator and had no problems...In fact that car was my daily driver in that set up for over a year

check out www.mx6.com I believe that forum is still up and running and you may be able to get some other advice on there.

thanks for moving the thread to a better location. im NOT running 120-150 amps continous. more like peak averagewould have to be about 50 or so. the 150 amps is when it really beats hard. im running a memphis 1000d amp which is 1100 rms and 2200 peak. Also im running a power acoustik 25 farad cap. i know im not reading the voltage because one the left led screen has the volts and on the right its the amperage. my lights dont dim or anything the only reason i have a concern about it is of what the cap said it was pullin. thanks for all the help. if i dont need an alternator please let me know would always love to save like 200 bucks.

The cap is full of s***. Your fine, pound happy.

The only reason you could be pulling that much is becuase that is what the cap needs to recharge :)

Bypass the cap and see what happens. im interested.

looks like thats what ill do. prolly keep it mostly turned down for now till i get some dynomat. but im still thinkin about upgrading the alternator to like a 105 just so the cap will recharge faster then. just in case. the alternators are only like 100 off ebay which isnt to bad. ill keep you informed about the bypassing the cap.

what you could do is take your stock alternator and get it rewound to 150 amps and then also upgrade your ground wires in the engine bay to 4ga... also would be a good ideal to do a grounding kit

ive heard of the rewound idea just wasnt to sure on where i could get this done at. also i have a question. will it hurt my alternator in the long run. like make it poop out twice as quick or what. and yes i have my battery grounded with two 4 gauge wires. also my cap is grounded with a single 0 gauge wire that is on a stinger grounding post. the triangle one. define grounding kit. what all would be in it.

i would go around and get a few estimates vs. goin to just the 1st shop you hear of... the grounding kit basically grounds your motor in a few spots than the stock one (ex: head to the body, tranny to the body, block to the body, etc) some site have grounding kits for sale and even show you the locations so you can build your own... i dont know the exact one so i would google it or do a search here on the forums
