Here's the whole thing: it's up to you as the owner to make the distinction between low cost and longevity. Payout now or payout later.

From the manufacturer and dealer perspective, the engineers want you to use moly, the bean counters don't.

It really is a personal choice.

Sent from the wrong side of the tracks.

Exactly. Dealerships only want to use the least expensive oil allowed by law and what Mazda allows. They don't want to pay more for Moly.

Don't even think car manufactures have any power to mandate what kind of oil dealers should use. Some Mazda dealers even use conventional oil or synthetic blend! Years ago many VW dealers was using 5W-30 conventional oil for 1.8T turbo even though VW of America specified 5W-40 synthetic oil. The result was oil sludge issue for many dealer-serviced turbo engines and class-action lawsuit.

True. That's why I don't trust dealers because they usually buy the cheapest bulk 55 gallon oil they can find. Plus the tire busters who change oil in the cars are sometimes so sloppy and lazy that I cringe on what they do to peoples cars.

I change my own oil but I had friends who went to dealers and ended up with stripped drain plugs, leaking plugs, double gaskets on drain plugs, missing 1qt of oil, failure to replace the oil filter, filled with wrong oil type, leaking oil filters, failure to replace oil fill cap, etc.

Been there and stories from friends and family... unless you put security sealing tape on everything you can never be sure all services have been rendered. Having a trusted 3rd party mechanic is golden IMO for those who don't want to fuss with maintenance items. Even if it costs more you may be saving money since some services you think are being rendered are not at the "untrusted" provider.
