My Wild? KL Build

Fair enough.

UPDATE:

Got the IM off, rear VC off, cams out, timing components off last night. I only worked on it for about 45 minutes, but I figured I could take care of that stuff and get started on taking stuff off of the motor so I can replace the head gasket.

I also got a set of GTS taillights. These are from the GTS, which was a '97 only package. One of the things that they had was a center reflector that did not have GT in/on it. They are also black outline instead of the awful red outline that came on the 95 tails. A fairly rare item that I bought from a friend who recently totalled his GTS, but picked up another one, so he didn't need the tails/reflector anymore. Just another rare little detail item that I picked up for it.

Does anyone know what's been happening JKPgt96's build? Haven't seen an update in quite a while and was wondering if he's still working on it.

Hello,

Yes, still working on it.

I bought a house and am selling my '96 so things have been really slow with the build as of now.

I should be able to get back to work on the '95 and the build next week. The used motor I bought to put in the '95 to test the water/oil setups had a bad head gasket, so I have the head off the motor and a new one to go on, I just have not had time to take care of it, but I plan to next week or so. From there, once I get it running again I have to get it legal, then it is off to the shop for the mounting of the oil pump. When that is done I can get the ball rolling on getting the bottom end put together. I have been talking with a couple builders about what mods need to be done to the block to aid in keeping everything oiled and happy, so I will have to have that done as well when everything goes off for the bottom end to be done.

At this point, I am trying to get back on track with the build and such so hopefully I will have some more progress to be shown coming up shortly. It is just been really slow the last few months since I have been saving and buying stuff to get myself situated in my new house and such.

I did make a purchase for the build...it is more something to do a little comparison with..but I won't say until I have it in my possession ;).

Lol. I am trying! I hope that by month's end the car is at JMB for the oil pump mount. I will be happy if that happens..I still need to get it tuned..it was running off the tune I had for my '96. But I cannot tune it until I install my new NGK AFx wideband..

Glad to hear you're still working on the build. I can't wait to hear how it turns out. Good luck with it and keep us posted.

Tonight/tomorrow I will be working on putting the rear head and new gasket on the rear head of the stock motor of the 95 to get it ready to install the COP and MS3/MS3x. Then get it legal.

Didn't realize it had been so long since I updated this...my new house and getting the 96 ready for pickup has been eating up my time and money as of late, but now my '96 is gone I can focus on this thing.

No no no..progress has slowed to a snail's pace the last 6 months with me buying a house and working on my '96 PGT to get it sold.

I still need to:
Get stock motor running again
Install MS3/MS3x
Get oil pump mounted/plumbed
Order Lifters
Have cams ground
Have bottom end assembled and block modded

Then the new motor will be ready to put together. Then shortly after working the bugs out the ITBs will go on. If it runs by season's end I will be thrilled.

I didn't order them yet. But I am getting the MMS shim under bucket SLAs from Bill at MiataRoadster.

make sure you take pics. i hear people talk about those but i dont know to much

With the really aggressive cam profile, I didn't want the shim having any chance of moving around on me. Also these are much lighter than the OEM SLAs. I believe the OEM ones are 38g without a shim, these are 32g I believe. At 9k+ rpm that really can be a nice difference. That said, they fit DE heads..but I think someone on PT stumbled on to SLAs that fit ZE heads..

What's the difference in price between the fancy Miater SLA's vs the G4's (I'm assuming that's the other alternative you were referring to)?

I dunno how much a set of OEM SLAs are, depends on where you find them and who is selling them ;). The Miata lifters where something like 250-300 for a set of 24.

I was just going to head to Pull a Part. Sad that there are a bunch of KLG4's sitting in the yard.. Do the SLA's wear down with time/miles, as in would that be a bad idea to pick them up there?
