My Wild? KL Build

A Probe...:D It originally was Matt Maas's Radiator that he had before doing the 2j swap. Then Jarod bought it, and now I am putting it to use.

Ok, so I wired up the second fan to come on with the first fan. Since the second fan will not come on, otherwise, since I have no A/C and such.

I lowered the fan on/off temperatures to 195/180 respectively. Removed the thermostat, refilled the system and the car seems to run just fine. Once moving it drops down around 175-180 degrees and stays there. At idle the car will get to the fan trigger point and immediately start dropping back down.

So...I am still tinkering with getting the cooling system working the way it should...but I found a couple major issues yesterday, but not anything that cannot be fixed. Tomorrow I am doing a lot of work on the car.

I have longtubes now, that are getting installed tomorrow, and the old hotshot headers are coming off.

I also went back to the stock fan, since they are properly spaced from the radiator, are larger, and have a shroud..versus the small 12 inch fans I initially had.

The heads are finalyl back at the machine shop after being sent off to be line honed. The blending on the ports, and flapping is all that is left before they go back to the flow-bench for final numbers (hopefully). I was told 2 weeks or so before they are back!

I will post up pics of the heads when I get them as well as the headers in comparison to the old ones.

I also ordered fittings and materials to mount the oil pump, and now need to have the fittings and pickup welded into the other pan I have.

Just curious, ballpark figure on how much time and money you have put into your project please?

^I'm also interested. I've been toying the idea of building a "frankenstein" KL with the best parts from all three (KL-DE, ZE, and G4), plus bolt-ons, reground cams, some porting, possibly Megasquirt (if it passes emissions, I haven't checked yet) etc. I'm not sure how aggressive I'd go at this point, since it's a DD, but would it be feasible to shoot for 200whp and still be able to pass emissions? I know Blackshine dyno'd 175whp with a (very strong running) ZE, I/H/E, bigger throttle body, pheno spacers, and not too much else.

I have enough into this build..it adds up quickly. I will tell you it is more than 5k, but I have not totalled it up. Time...well, a lot of time on the phone talking to industry experts, talking to parts companies to figure out how to use parts that are not necessarily for the KL on it. And also talking to PRM and Leo, the two people who have done this before..and talking to them about what they would do differently, what it would take to do a race build like they have, but in a street car..that is the big obstacle to overcome for me..but I think we have it figured out. Should know soon enough. :D I have been working/researching this build for almost 2 years to make sure I have my bases covered, and to figure out how to do the things that Leo/PRM said they wish they would have done.

I did 171whp on a Mustang Dyno. That was:

Fresh Rebuild
ZE Pistons
Stock DE heads
Stock DE cams
Full bolt-ons
Hotshot Headers
Megasquirt
No a/c
Straight neck ZE manifold

I put on ZE heads, Mike Seli Mild n/a cams, ported klg4 manifold..car was easily a 190+whp car, it pulled on a 99-04 MGT fairly well..

Pacesetter Headers
65mm TB
ported klg4 IM
Exhaust Cut-out
Intake
Interprep Valve Springs
Colt 218 cams
ZE Pistons
Megasquirt

This would get you very close, if not over 200whp on a KL.

If you wanted to take the next step you could do a Solid Lifter conversion, and have colt do a SLA grind for them..do a little porting.

Thanks for that. Sorry to kinda hijack this a bit. Would that 200whp engine be able to pass emissions, still? The standards in my county are less strict than CA, but I don't know them off hand. I could probably grab one of my old test sheets if you need specific readings.

Have you seen this thread? I've never seen a breakdown of the pro's and con's of each of the KL's before.

Nah, it is fine.

The issue would be the cams. With the overlap in the 218's your emissions would probably increase some. You could still have EGR still working, as I believe the G4 IM has a spot for it, so long as you use DE heads. The KLG4 IM is essentially an updated straight neck ZE, because the runners are actually rectangular until they turn down toward the head, where Mazda simply transitioned them into oval, so opening them up to rectangle, or whatever shape you like is very easy.

In short, I honestly cannot tell you one way or another if it would still pass. If you had to, I would bet you could pass emissions, but I am not sure. You can tune of course with the MS, but I am unsure of how much you can tune for emissions.

I have not seen that thread before, but it is nothing new to me..there is a lot left out in there..

Well, the heads are done! Manual steering rack is installed. Things are moving along. I posted pictures in the pic forum of each. I am so ready to get this thing together..

Shortly I will have the oil pump mounted, hopefully. Then from there I just need to get the gear/belt setup. Then I can send everything off for the bottom-end!

On a side not, I am selling my '96 Probe GT. I have picked up a low mile, rare color 95 GT that all of this work will now go in to. (The rack is in this car)

I will be keeping a close eye on it, but I expect that it will last for a good while, hopefully a few years. The thing will not get driven more than 3k a year or so. I will be doing compression checks, measuring oil consumption, etc..to keep an eye on it. It is not a motor that is only going to see track action. I know I will be making trips to the track with it, but not THAT often. Especially with my local track closing this year.

We shall see though.

Time for an update:

All of this is now going in my Sierra Mist Blue '95 GT that I bought to replace my '96 GT that is for sale.

How things sit as of now:

I have updated the original post and will put up pics of the 'new' parts that are taking place of the ones that got replaced in the first post.

Link to my heads that are now sitting and awaiting install on the bottom-end:
http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/showthread.php?123786667-10-000-rpm-heads-look-like-this..

The '95 needs a head gasket on the rear bank, as the motor I bought had a blown one. I will begin doing this, this week and finish it up over the weekend. Once this is done the car will get a rough tune on it and driven to JMB performance to have the oil pump mounted and the pulley situation taken care of, along with some plumbing work done for the oiling.

From this I can order the proper set of gears/pullies for the oil pump and send them along with the bottom end parts to be balanced, assembled, etc..

I hope to have the car to JMB in the next couple weeks, and hopefully it will only be there a couple weeks. I look to have the car back by the end of the month or so, so that I may be able to run the oil setup and test it out for a while on this stock motor.

Also, I have been continuing to buy stuff for the car..

NGK Powerdex Wideband 02 (Time to step up from the LC-1)
Aeromotive AFPR (with another MBX fuel rail adapter)
MS3/MS3x
Coil on Plug conversion parts
'98 626 NGK plug wires
OEM Euro Indicators, harnesses, brackets

The ITB setup is nearing completion as well.

When the car is back from JMB I also plan on getting the car setup on the MS3/MS3x and COP setup to test out while I test the oiling. And possibly test out the ITB setup for a bit.

I have a meet in Columbia Missouri April 30-May 1, and Bamm in Indy May 27-29th. So I am working around those. I am trying to get as much done as I can on the car, but still have it running and in attendance for both meets. So, if I am not going to have time to tune and such the new motor before BAMM, then I will just drive it with the ITB, MS3, etc on a stock motor until after BAMM, then put in the new motor. I don't want to rush anything..but I am trying to keep this on track as much as I can.

Damn, the columbia meet is the 30-1...i was planning to go to mazdas at the mitty!

(Good to hear about all the progress, looking forward to seeing it soon..)

the itb's are gonna be awesome. i was thinking of trying that down the road a bit

And the '95 needs a head gasket on the rear, the '96 is in process of having a new harness put in! lol
