Aside from a few hundred $ I don't think it could've been any more expensive ;)

Hey guys n gals, I've just dug this topic up because I'm considering installing one of both the diff's mentioned on here. I'm a newbie that's not a newbie (if you get what I mean), so please bare with me if there is information on here that I have missed.

Now a few things, everyone is talking about welding MSP stock lsd...where abouts are you talking about? Only thing that the image suggests is that you weld together the top diff casing to the crown wheel mounting? I'm currently putting out 200Hp at the wheels, so even then, would the MSP LSD hold up...I am planning further power mods.

2nd, Quaife's...is there a topic on here on what has to be done to fit them? I've seen MSPRO's topic on what she fitted, but didn't go into much detial. I've read on a few places that you have to change one of the CV input shafts? I have got access to both the 28 and 26 spline inputs...is this the only differences or is there another variation? And why only one side? Myth?

And just to clarify, CustomMSP, you posted this link to a pic of the revised LSD. http://www.msprotege.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=26189
That doesn't look like a LSD diff. I pulled the diff out of my spare gearbox on the weekend and this is what I found.

That diff is NOT lsd...was that image a mistake or am i missing something on the attachment pic that makes it LSD.

Hope you guys can help.

Cheers
ROB.

Rob,

That actually is the LSD. I'll take a pic tonight of where we welded the LSD together. As far as I know Quaife makes a direct replacement for the protege transmission.

Hey thanks for the quick reply. Do you know of a cheaper place than corksport to get a quaife for the protoge?

Also I found this post by JDM Sam and he asks the same question...how does it work as an LSD. But look at the pic that he posted of the open center diff...that one is the LSD. ;) So yeah, it was a bugger up of the attachments that started the confusion.

So yeah, the two diffs in my first post are not the lsd's.

Oh man we've been jacked by mazda hehe. We'll my stock lsd looks exactly like the revised LSD and it did what it's suppose to do I can tell you that :)

rob, just get the quaife
it will outlast the toichi-something-or-other LSD that MSPs have.
they make a direct replacement for Protege, Probe, MX-6....

Thanks...

So with that, as I said I'm putting out 200whp now. Planning to get up for around 250 in the future (say a year or so). Is this the only weakness that has been found with the MSP diffs? Will they last with up to 250Hp though em if I weld it from the word go?

I know the Quaife is the beter option, but with a $1500US price tag plus modding, I really dont have that sort of money...but if the MSP diff will not support 250whp, I will not hesitate to track one down.

Can anyone tell me, do the MSP's use 28 spline drive shafts? If so, I already have them.

If you use a MSP diff. You need MSP axles as they are a larger dia.

I had enough hp to run 13.1's and I ran the stock diff. Of course now I'm on my third but only because the second one had a defect.

The revised differential uses F'n M as its force for the LSD action.

Ah nice times...how long you reckon it'll last though? You confordent that it will hold up?

My last 1/4 time was a 13.9sec @ 107.5mph in street trim. But yeah, the syncro's have come back a little worse for ware, and I need help with traction, so that's the reason for a new box and trying to source a LSD.

Do you know the diameter of the shafts so that I can compare them to mine?

F'n m?? I'm learning as I go sorry guys, is that clutch type?
